    Good item was ITV News.
Looks like a small fraction of the millions sold have been modified and going to take a year before all done but looked as if only about a quarter of those sold had been registered so far for repair.
    Government to take action tomorrow.

If you want the actuate numbers watch ITV+1, another bulletin.

I think it said 1.5 million been reported, this has jumped up a lot since the 625,000 the BBC reported a few weeks ago.

Glad the Government are taking action, about time as well.

    Did it?

If it did "work" then it should be easy to replicate and anyone threatening the same should get the exact same outcome.

If however it was due to another variable (such as goodwill), then you'll find varying results (which is - going by the responses on this thread - what has happened).

Although you'll never agree, it doesn't matter how it worked it just did in this case.

A lot of consumer problems are not just about SOGA, there can be a lot more success with complaining firmly but politely with the person who has the power to override the companies policies.

Well in that posters case, it doesn't matter. But to anyone looking to replicate it, its going to matter a good deal.

No idea what your last paragraph is on about. I already said in my previous post that goodwill and legal entitlement are two different things. I wasn't disagreeing with the outcome, I disagreed with longtalltales assertion that it was due to a legal entitlement rather than goodwill.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I'm not sure if this is the same as the ITV news bulletin or not but this (link below) interview with a lady from Hotpoint was released today and gives a good indication that they're actively employing more engineers and call centre staff - she also answers questions as to using the machine when fire bodies have said not to etc...

    http://player.vimeo.com/video/155704348?title=1&byline=1&portrait=1&autoplay=0

Note: The reporter is acting like this woman is a devil worshipper for no particular reason. He is also annoyingly repetitive with questions the lady has already provided solid answers to.

I'm all for in-depth interviews and a good roasting when needed; but this reporter is basically just whinging all the way through and seems to lack the critical ability to remain neutral and think on his feet to ask further questions vs just repeating the ones he no doubt memorised whilst his mother drove him to the interview.

It's a terrible interview IMO because ITV appear to have sent an angry man-child to conduct it - but if you can overlook this the lady from Hotpoint does answer some of the 'hot' questions very well.
  • I registered my vented dryer in November and received a call from Hotpoint a couple of weeks ago offering a repair in May or the offer of a new one for £59 or a condenser model for £99. I said I would think about it rather than make a snap decision and they said they would call me back later in the day.
As they did not ring back I called them yesterday and got through in a few minutes. I decided to go for the condenser model for £99 as I think this is a fair deal as a replacement for my 3 year old machine. It is being delivered on 2nd March.
Job done. Can't understand some of the comments on this thread. I think at the end of the day this is fair and reasonable.

A lot of people on here are debating whether the affected machines are faulty or fit for purpose.

I'd suggest that they could be descibed as faulty or not fit for purpose because a lot of the models have a delay start. This feature is designed for people to use them at night (unattended) with reduced rate electricity or during the day (unattended if out) with Solar Panels.

Hotpoint have told people not to use them unattended, so this must mean they are not suitable to do the job that many people bought them for.
  • Registered my hotpoint ctd00p in November and was given a fix date of June. I've had it for about seven or eight years without any problems at all up until a few days ago when it started making funny noises while rotating.

I'm not sure it will last to June to be honest and if they repair it I'll probably have to buy a new one shortly after they do so.

The £99 deal for a condenser is a no brainer for me. I've had great service out the old one and am getting a healthy discount on a new one. Result.

I wish more of my appliances were fire risks now. ;-)

So Hotpoint are saying they are ok as long as they are attended but they not saying what to do after that when they go wrong in that situation.
Going wrong means in this case getting on fire.
Yes you would dial 999 and get out of the house and watch your kitchen get destroyed.
The situation is not good enough.

My condenser dryer was nearly 9 years old and stopped working a couple of years ago, it was left in place because on the outside it looked brand new and we kept putting the repair off, in January the engineer came and replaced every single internal parts including the drum while fitting the safety device, free of charge. Maybe worth you trying to hold out?
