Hotpoint urgent tumble dryer recall

I got my dryer from Brighthouse who are no help at all, they delivered me a loan dryer today, which just so happens to be also affected by the fire recall. All they do is blame Hotpoint.0

You should inform Trading Standards about Brighthouse then in order to protect others.0

I am afraid to inform you that you where wrong. I got a call from Hotpoint this afternoon, my letter did the trick. I am getting a new dryer delivered on Friday, one to match my current one in Graphite.
And for the record, I bought it originally from Argos.
I'm not sure exactly what court action specifically you threatened them with but if it was anything to do with SOGA or "fit for purpose" then it certainly wouldn't hold up in court. Your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer - this is not "wrong".
Well done for getting Hotpoint to replace it so quickly, but by all means they certainly didn't have any legal reason to do so off the back of your letter - Argos are the ones responsible under SOGA, not Hotpoint.Little_lindy wrote: »I got my dryer from Brighthouse who are no help at all, they delivered me a loan dryer today, which just so happens to be also affected by the fire recall. Send it in the post to the address above so it isn't dealt with via your local store.
Not sure exactly what you want but you'll need to make it clear in your complaint (i.e. do you want to end your agreement or simply have a different brand machine?)0 -
Interesting thread. We received notification the other day that we will have to wait until June which I'm not happy about.
Shall be writing to them with a threat of small claims court - given the cost of them working on a court claim my guess either they will settle or not bother to engage, in either case I win.
Let's see. Will post here how I get on.....0 -

On what grounds will you threaten them with the small claims court?0 -

See above post... unless you purchased the dryer directly FROM Hotpoint then you can threaten court action all you like but ultimately any court would throw the case out within minutes if you didn't purchase the dryer directly from Hotpoint and I'm sure Hotpoint are well aware of this - it's the retailer you should be going after if you want to go down the court route. You have no contract with Hotpoint at all (unless of course you purchased the dryer directly from Hotpoint).
By all means write a letter to Hotpoint, in fact I recommend it as most people seem to get much more positive outcomes this way (and it's more than likely why GrottBags was offered a replacement dryer).
But I honestly don't think people should be firing out court threats unless they have actually have done the research and have at least a very basic understanding of how SCC and SOGA/CRA work. Sadly if you are threatening the manufacturer with court action and not your retailer then you clearly don't know how it works and you'll look very stupid when they call you out on it or worse you actually do take the case to SCC where it's thrown out and you loose your money.0 -

I have reported them to trading standards today via citizens advice. It was citizens advice who also informed me that I should be able to cancel my contract with Bh and get a refund as it wasn't fault free when I bought it. However Bh just logged it as a complaint saying I will hear from them hopefully within 24 hrs but there is nothing they can do as its Hotpoints fault 😡0 -
Brighthouse are no doubt working on the assumption that they can get away with anything, considering that you made a decision to buy the thing from them in the first place.0

Wrote to Whirlpool regarding my Indesit TD yesterday. Complained about shifting dates for repair and was called back to book appointment for 24th Feb. Will see how it goes....0

I have been reading this thread with interest and wanted to share my own experiences with Hotpoint / Whirlpool.
I originally had a 6KG, B Rated, Tumble Dryer TVM562G which I bought in Curry's just over 6 years ago now, and it has never given me any problems. I like many others registered back in November after discovering mine was one that needed the modification. In December, I had a call and was booked in for a modification, which I had no issues with having done. It was carried out in about an hour by a nice friendly Hotpoint engineer.
All was well, until 2 days into using my dryer there was a smell of burning. I reported this to Hotpoint, who decided to send the engineer back, he agreed he could smell burning but did not know where it was coming from. He reported back to Hotpoint who called later that day and said they were now going to replace my dryer for a new one and I would get a call in 72 hours to confirm the model number and delivery.
I then heard nothing for 3 weeks, during which time I did not want to risk using my modified dryer. I couldn't get through on the telephone to reach them, I was put on hold, cut off and got very frustrated. I do not use social media so I wrote to them. That letter was signed for, but they ignored it, I gave them 2 weeks in which to contact me.
Feeling somewhat annoyed I wrote again, this time advising them that if they did not contact me in 7 days of receipt of this letter, I would start legal action, quoting SOGA, despite the fact I purchased the dryer from Curry's. I felt it gave weight to my argument, and more so because I had already had the modification, in which something went wrong and I was left being ignored and with no dryer, not ideal when you live in a flat and have no drying space outside.
I was aware of the offer to buy a new vented dryer for £59, but it was a C Rating and had a bigger drum, all of which I didn't need. I explained I would have much preferred a dryer to a same spec as the one I had previously bought. My old one was graphite colour, but I was not bothered about the colour of the new one, this was not an issue for me and was not mentioned in my letter.
I eventually got a reply 24 hours after the letter was signed for by Hotpoint / Whirlpool and was offered an identical dryer, a new model Hotpoint FTVFG65BGG in Graphite - currently £249 on the Curry's website. It was delivered two days later and all is well.
For those that happy with waiting times etc. I can only say, stand your ground and do it politely by letter, make sure you send it recorded so you get a signature. If your not happy with model replacements being offered, ask them for the model that matches your current model.
I was rather surprise to get an identical newer model and more so in the graphite colour. Loving the new dryer.0
