walked out of jobcentre work experience

I really disagree with these "voluntary" schemes when being asked to work for big companies like Poundland, charities are always crying out for volunteers so surely it would be better to get people to gain experience while helping out the community.
If there is the chance of a job at the end of it then fair enough, I recall when i worked for Poundland they had to employ something like 1 out of 6-10 trainees (it varied). This often resulted in getting 10 trainees at christmas time rather than paying for christmas temps and then giving one a temporary short contract at the end of it.
In my store volunteers were never given uniforms or name badges, which was unfair there was no equality among staff and volunteers. In our store it was rare for volunteers to go on the till as one volunteer had stole a lot of money and they choice to trust no other volunteers which seemed unfair.
There was some younger trainees who were required to work in the store for i recall around 3 months at 30 hours per week, for this they got their travelling expenses and their JSA. It isn't a fair system when a lot of these volunteers were better than paid staff.
But i totally agree, normally with poundland there is a lot of staff, high turnovers so all staff should really have a locker.0 -
My philosophy is if you want something you have to work for it0

Sorry did you think i was being a hypocrite, did you think I was going to say "oh I did do any voluntary work"
no, I just wanted to know where you had done volunteer work, as I said I am now going to do volunteer work in a charity shop.
I was told by a member of staff in poundland that usually at this time of year they would have had temporary Christmas staff starting, but instead they just have "volunteers" so they are replacing paid staff.
and I am not long term unemployed I have been unemployed for just over a month, and I have 4 years retail experience.
I don't mind doing work experience put not for a million pound company that are using you for profits.0 -

Yeah, but usually it's down to the individual how they want to do that and they do the best thing they can to get where they want. They will then get there because they're motivated, confident, proved themselves and didn't work for 30 hours a week for weeks for free at poundland for fear of sanction.0 -

My philosophy is if you want staff you have to pay them at least NMW - not get the tax payer to pay them the same as JSA.0 -
My point if you read my posts is that workfare could be changed to send people to Charities or schools (NPO's), not big companies
Or to do the same as the old YTS used to do, e.g. train people for a career they are interested in or would excel in based on their strengths0 -

You do, but do you see the key point there. Play. It's all just a game with the JC. It's not somewhere you go to get help finding a job, it's more like an unfair game of monopoly.
Pass Go, collect your JSA. Go to Jail, do not pass Go (sanction). Land on the train station, next roll is where your interview is. Go to xxx, collect JSA if you pass Go (a sign on day). Sometimes though you get a get of jail free card (appeal). The thing is you can never win because the JC already have all hotels up everywhere from the start and you just keep landing on them (in other words going to the JC to sign on, going to the WP, going to other companies to "volunteer" etc).
I'm hoping you've played monopoly, it's one of the most popular board games, but if not I'm basically saying the game's set up in their favour from the start.
It's not a fair game and it's not one anyone wants to play that way.
They are - just not the OP.0 -

I agree.
Workfare should be for charities or in the community, not to provide free labour for profit making businesses.
However, as I'm not in charge, claimants will have to do the best they can within the existing situation if they want to continue to claim.0 -

You "win" by getting a job.0
