Tesla Model X Ownership Costs?

Sadly the way I see it, if you want a battery EV with a real life range of over 200 miles, the Model S is the only choice for the next few years.
Are we not expecting any other manufactuers to show their hand? For example couldn't Nissan stick their tech into a quashqai with a battery pack twice the size?I think....0 -

Maybe, but sadly that would leave people driving a heavier, slower, less practical Qashqai. Even worse, it'd still be, well... A Qashqai.0 -
Nissan has a 60kWh prototype Leaf battery pack. It only a bit heavier than the current pack, same size, but double the amount of charge stored. So that's a real leap in battery pack density
.
In real life this will allow a Leaf to cover 250 miles easily....BUT it's a prototype, and going from a one-off prototype to mass production is not a easy process, especially the getting the cost lower.
I'm 100% sure 250-300 miles real life range sub £30K EVs are coming but in the next 5 years+ rather than next 12-24 months. Sadly I'm not patient enough to wait half a decade. If you got the means, I would say you wouldn't be disappointed by a Tesla, infact I've read hardly if any negative reviews from actual owners.

Not that difficult to re engineer the floor pan I wouldn't have thought.
Having looked at a Tesla chassis in their showroom in West London the batteries are not massively tall.
Personally I think as battery technology improves it will be even less difficult to fit ever larger capacities of batteries under the cabin floor instead of under the boot. Or in addition to those under the boot floor.0 -

You thought wrong. I'm no car designer, but you have to decide from the start of a car design what you want to potentially do with it or it will cost a lot to re-engineer. Think of the cost of crash testing alone. Then you have to sell it in volume too. Part of the Quashqai's success, I guess, is that they're all exactly the same body. Same goes for Juke.0 -

A very good mate of mine spends his days driving several (not at the same time though...) around the Nissan factory, which aren't quite the same. A TINY manufacturing error means they would never meet the required crash safety standard, so they're used as factory cars. Re-engineering the floorpan to accommodate a battery, safely, and retaining the structural integrity of the vehicle would cost many millions of pounds and that investment would likely not ever be recouped.0 -
So do we really think the Model 3 which looks to be at least 2 years away in the UK will be the first 'mass-market' 250 mile plus EV? I can't beleive other manufacturers aren't going down the EV route.I think....0

A lot of people want more than 250 miles between charges though, At least double that and they need to think about all those people that park on the street, how can they charge an EV?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
