JackieO you're quite right about your mums generation being the first recyclers (make do and mend) one massive difference back then to now is there simply wasn't food to throw away in such qtys as we do now. Sure the odd thing might have gone out (compost / animal feed possibly) but without fridges / freezers and all the convenience food we have, people didn't / couldn't do massive shops or have the choice we so today so often waste was not an option.

Part of today's issue is we simply buy too much, on a whim and then lose interest or forget about it like a child losing interest of a toy at Xmas whilst food merrily festers in our fridges / cupboards only to be thrown out.

I feel terribly bad at thrown out food, this year I'm thinking of forgoing the Xmas turkey for this reason, my OH is veggie so won't eat it, so at most it will be me and my DM, who is also not overly fussed and would have a veggie option. I could quite easily get something veggie, plus I have a small beef joint in the freezer I could cook for me / left overs, I also have a stuffed guinea fowel I could cook. At most, if DM wanted turkey, I need to buy something to serve 2. Not spend over £30 on a bird for 8 as I usually do then complain about eating LO for a month after.

Conversely I've had cheese go mouldy before it's Best Before - so by the logic of sticking with the dates printed should I have eaten it?

Er, yes, why not? Just cut the mould away and its fine underneath. I thought everyone did that :D

This was a bag of grated cheese (before I'm shot down in flames it was cheaper per kg than the block cheese or at least comparable in price) it stank like sweaty feet and the mould was webbed all the way through the product.

They do if they work in Tesco!

According to the TV expose that ran a few years ago, anyway. One of the stores near me was targeted and shown to indulge in this practice. I was surprised at the time, as a few years prior I was buying salmon one Christmas Eve and the store was out of lemons. I wanted one for the fish and as a last resort asked if I could buy one that was on ice at the counter display, but was told I couldn't have it for H&S reasons. So am guessing the cheese incident was down to some bright spark behind the counter not following procedure.

Yes I saw that programme. I thought that the supermarket looked familiar as I watched it.

Turned out to be a shop I used to drop into to and from work when I worked near London.

Was always was more careful on buying anything fresh at that store from then on.

But as always, It's the store management who should really pick up on the bad practices their staff do. There's enough cctv they can review.
