I hate being rushed through the till at Aldi. I feel that my shopping is being thrown at me. I use a basket and not a trolley, you have to leave them on the floor once you have unloaded onto the belt. I then go down to the other end and put my own shopping bags on the floor and hurriedly try and pack them in some kind of order, while the operator is waiting with drawer open to take my payment. There's no way I can get to the packing shelf with my loose items. Cash or card they ask, mostly it's cash with me. They have the change ready even before I have taken the money out of my purse. Not a nice experience.

Actually you don't need to leave your supermarket basket after you put your items on the conveyor.

I take the basket right through the checkout, so they go back in the basket as they're checked out, and I can then pack into my own bag at my leisure in the packing area provided. Try it - it'll make the whole experience much more pleasant.

I've also found staff at Aldi and Lidl pleasant and polite. Much more so than M&S, who often seem to have the attitude they're doing you a favour by helping. I've also seen plenty of out of date stuff on M&S's shelves, particularly bread. I pointed it out to a member of staff once - no apology, she just started grumpily unloading the offending items from the shelf.

I've been to Waitrose today and the woman who served me was a right miserable c*w. Well served is hardly a word I'd use. She didn't look at me or speak to me once. She spent all her time moaning to the person on the next till that they should staff the self-serve checkouts as someone had the audacity to ask her for help. All that and a grumpy face thrown in.:rotfl:Maybe she didn't like the fact that I was using a Sainsbury's carrier bag!

Not an uncommon experience at Waitrose, in my experience.

In fact a friend of mine once said that he often found the cheaper the shop the nicer the staff are.

I really don't see why they can't just put proper use by/best before dates on their produce like the other supermarkets. Until they do i won't be shopping their again even if it costs me a couple of quid more. I don't want food poisoining. These cryptic codes they use must mean they are hiding something.

How do you know that how Aldi put buy/best before dates, is not the correct way, and all the other Supermarkets are doing it wrong.

It just worries me know days people have to spoon fed because they just can't use the brain they were born with.

I might be wrong but I believe they said their 'Use By' dates were clearer. A 'Best Before' is just that - an indication of when a product is at it optimum for taste / texture etc but it won't kill you if you eat it after that.

Conversely I've had cheese go mouldy before it's Best Before - so by the logic of sticking with the dates printed should I have eaten it?

If I got to the local market stall, none of the veg there has any BB dates on - does that mean they are hiding something?

Most of us were born with enough senses to tell if something is off or not, we don't need to be spoon fed some arbitrary 'Best Before' date when employing common sense.

Agreed. I thought it was a given that normal folk understand BBE to be a guideline, nothing more. This thread will teach me not to make reasonable assumptions!

I'd love to know how many cases of food poisoning can be attributed to Aldi's pre-packed fruit and veg :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

How ridiculous. If you can't shop without codes on food, you really shouldn't be going out alone. Do you have anyone who can go with you in future ? To avoid all the dangerous foodstuffs you might come across ?

Can we call the dogs off? I'm sure amstel2 isn't the only shopper who would prefer the same labelling adopted everywhere at Aldi.

This is meant to be a helpful forum. The is an irony to people posting rude replies and then moaning about rude staff!

I agree, the incredulity has been accompanied by a touch of aggression. amstel2 is free to voice their opinion and shop wherever they like, but to suggest Aldi puts the public at risk of food poisoning without proof or even logic I think is libellous.

  • I have been shopping for the best part of 60 odd years and so far my 'nose' and eyes have not let me down yet I can spot if stuff looks a bit soft or off and consequently I don't buy it (unless its reduced veg and I can make something like soup from it,small blemishes can be cut out) I don't need dates on the food I buy I am quite capable of looking ,smelling and touching to see if its OK.Back in the dark ages of post war Britain when few women had fridges, freezer, washing machines or microwaves Its amazing how we all survived really :)

My late Mum had razor sharp eyes when it came to bargain hunting (probably I have inherited them) :):):)

Often back then both cheese and jam got a bit 'furry' at times but this was removed and we ate what was left .I swear my late Mums generation were the original 'recyclers' as nothing was wasted, especially food.

When you have queued for an hour for something you aren't going to throw it in the bin the next day.
I am quite capable of putting an egg in a glass of water to ensure its still fresh,if it sinks its o.k. if it floats ,mmm bit doubtful.

If the tin is 'blown' then its time to bin it.I can't remember the last time I saw a blown tin.
Basically its common sense and I don't need a date to tell me whats safe or not
