    Hi all!
Could I get a number please? I've cancelled my Park Xmas Savings as I want to do most of my shopping locally for next Christmas or via small online business so want to save cash rather than towards vouchers. I'll save a regular amount at the beginning of the month plus any silver / gold coins I lay my hands on to give it a boost!

    Thanks!

  • Thank you Sue-UU! I've really thrown myself back into sorting my finances out as am doing 5 challenges.
Got two nice shiny pots form pound land and my daughter helped pot the £2 loose change I had from my purse today so I'm now on £17.01! Get in! Daughter is hopefully going to enjoy saving with me. She certainly enjoyed putting the coins in the tin and shaking them. She's five! And both tins don't open!
Got the second tin for the Xmas £1 a day challenge :T

Well that's embarrassing, I've got my 6-year membership award (really???) and rarely visit these days!! I always start these things and don't see them through (I was in the £2 challenge before because I always collect them) so please can I join/rejoin this year's (I thought it ran from January, my bad)??

Last year's sealed-tin was for a trip to London to see Hamlet at the Barbican Theatre in October, and I saved £300 in a mixture of £2s and a few notes. I subbed myself an additional £150 and actually brought the £300 home! Was so proud. Unfortunately due to financial constraints of hubby being on long term sick leave, that money then went towards a hotel bill for a family trip down south that we've just returned from. My mum paid me her share but of course it never went back in the bank. I also emptied our giant Coke bottle of loose change last August; it wasn't getting any fuller, just spreading out like an elephant's foot with the weight of the coins, and there was £373.00 in it (all coins smaller than 50p). That went into our joint account but again regrettably got hoovered up by life - my husband underwent major surgery in August and on the verge of being discharged went into septic shock, spending 10 days in ICU and coming within hours of death. Consequently I was effectively living on one wage as I had no access to his bank account and that money also got hoovered up in hospital parking fees and the like. My work colleagues even had a whip-round and gave me £100 cash towards the exhorbitant parking charges. He was in hospital for 7 weeks in total, so you can imagine; even though I managed to get a parking permit for a week, it still came at a price and that was after a week in ICU at £8.40 a day. In truth, I'm gutted that the money we saved just got frittered away one way or another. When I'm stressed I spend - 7 new pairs of shoes, a number of shopping trips - and I was off work myself for 10 weeks altogether so once he was out of danger and reverted to normal visiting times, I had numerous hours a day in which to spend money and live 5 mins away from a shopping centre. I also know my credit card number/details off by heart so don't need it with me to use it!! I did know my debit card details as well but that one expired and I'm trying hard not to learn the new one!

Sorry that's a bit longwinded but the point is, I can clearly do it when I set my mind to it!! My personal challenges for the coming year are to reduce/clear my credit card balance - currently in the region of £3500 out of a £3800 limit, save something/anything regularly. I always set my goals too high; my mentality is to get a large sum of money saved quickly but I always end up dipping into it because a) I can and b) I leave myself too little cash. Myself and a friend/colleague have said we're leaving our cards at home when we return to work on Monday, I have a cash account which requires walking to a cash machine to obtain money and quite frankly, I'm too lazy!

  • Hi everyone, put rest of the change from my purse into the pot tonight, not sure how much (I want a surprise when I open it in Nov).

Went to Ike@ this afternoon and although there was a lot of people it wasn't as bad I thought it would be, but the journey up and down the M6 was horrendous!!! It was one long traffic jam, without any reason from what we saw(thankfully no accidents that we know) so it took ages to get there and back, but at least I wasn't driving. I didn't spend anything there, although I saw lots that I fancied, but had to call the shop near home for bread and milk so the change is from that. Also my new month is starting Friday and as I'm not going out tomorrow I thought I would pot everything in my purse before I get the urge to spend it!!

A good start to this challenge for me I think.

Nothing in today as I haven't spent anything to get change!
I have decided to tie this in with my slimming world journey though, I'd lost about 16lbs but that's gone out the window with Christmas etc! From now on, for every lb I shift, £1 goes in my pot. When I hit a half stone marker or if I get slimmer of the week £2 goes in, and a stone mark £5 goes in. I've got a fair bit to shift so it should all add up!
