Housing Benefit Advice - mum maybe moving in!

hopetodream,
I apologise if you feel I was patronising you that was not my intention and I never for a moment made any suggestion you are planning this for financial gain.
My advice was given because I am in this situation twenty years down the line - a lot has changed in that time and in retrospect I would do things differently. Your life will change as your children grow up and leave home, you may then want to downsize or just move to live somewhere else. I find its quite a difficult balancing act between the needs of my family (particularly my husband) and the needs of my Mother - which are often quite different!0 -
Thanks Mossfarr. Sorry im just a bit tentative at the moment. So much going on.
I understand. Its a hard decision to make, but I want her safe, we are a very close family, and I pormised dad as he was dying that I would look after her. I just wish I was a millionaire!
Im not, so if she can get HB to help with her share, it means that we can lead a relatively normal life, and I know she is next doom safe sound and hopefully happy.
It was her idea to do this, if it happens at all. Yes we get gains froms it, but its 2 way, and non of it financial. Its a hard decision for us to make If she is with us, I can help her with my brother when he stays which can be very physically and emotionally demanding. I can make sure she eats a cooked meal at night, and make sure that she is not scared to answer the door in the dark.
As this is a site for money issues, I hoped some one could give us straight forward advice as to if she could contribute towards to hike in rent. If it cant be done, then she stays where she is and we move to a smaller house. Its no biggy, but I want her close x0 -
This answers your question.

Has your mother claimed pension credit.0 -
Thanks Merlin, no she is not old enough. She is 55, dad was 67 when he died. They gave her widows benfit for a year, and she also gets some PIP. It does very much look like she cant live with us, which is a shame, as it would be nice to know she is safe next door. I am going to speak to the council on monday, as untlimately we would save them money.
They pay fully for a 2 bed property, with us, she would only have 1, so far less. I wish I earnt a bit more so it wouldnt be an issue, but I dont0 -

Why do they cover the full rent of a 2 bed property?0 -
Can you speak to the protential landlord and ask if he would considering renting the property as two charging both yourself and your mother rent, this may work in his favour as he might be able to get a bit more rent this way.
No idea if this would be feasible you would need to look into it carefully, its just an idea.0 -
She will be able to claim income support, she is receiving PIP
Surely this is enough to cover her share of utulites and food.
And also presumably you will save money if she is looking after your children, saving you childcare costs.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Widows Benefit hasn't existed for years, I expect she gets the Bereavement Allowance. What will she be living on when this runs out next year?0 -
If she is not eligible for her own state pension at her pension date she will be able to claim full state pension becase of your dads contributions, so she will benefit from that at least.
Tell her to ring the DWP and have a chat with them.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I'm not sure she'd be eligible for IS.
"Which groups of people can claim income support?
Only certain people are allowed to claim income support. You may be able to eligible to claim if you:
are entitled to statutory sick pay;
are pregnant and incapable of work because of your pregnancy or are due to have your baby within the next 11 weeks;
have had a baby within the last 15 weeks;
are a lone parent and responsible for a child under 5; or
are caring for someone and either you get carer's allowance, or the person you are looking after gets a qualifying benefit (attendance allowance or constant attendance allowance, the middle or highest rate of the care component of disability living allowance, the daily living component of personal independence payment or armed forces independence payment)."

Otherwise I agree with the points you've made.:)0
