I actually started a thread on the health and beauty forum. It's been going for a few years now. It's great fun. As far as I know we are all females although maybe we are a bit like women's magazines that men read in secret:rotfl:

Maybe we have quite a large male following......

It's called "Frump to Fab". we discuss all thinks "fabulous" be it food, fashion, interior design, entertainment, travel, careers, relationships.

A bit of a lifestyle thing. Anyhoo it's great fun. I shall launch on there.

Actually it was my intention to start in January but of course life got in the way a bit.

Anyway just because it's a year I don't think it really matters when it starts. A year is just 12 months

Anyway the last month of my challenge will see me sailing off to the Amazon (I think Jan 7th) so that can be the challenge finale.:D

Right I have to confess my laziness knows no bounds today. Time I got dressed and got cracking.

A woman after my own heart. Someone asked me the other day if it was too late to wish me Happy New Year. I replied that every day is a new year (I hope) to me. I have a feeling the trip to the Amazon won't be a finale LL - more of a hiatus.

I am dressed but haven't done too much so far. Dinner for tonight is planned and prepped and the kitchen is clean and tidy; I have caught up with a couple of letters I had to write;and I have sorted a few more things for charity shop drop. On a "moochy" day I do what I advised AC to do - little bit of "doing something" then a little bit of idling. Have 2 books on the go at the moment, plus planned knitting, but now feel it would only be polite to go and investigate the Health and Beauty forum.

I too have a clean and tidy kitchen - as long as you don't count the lingering smell of kipper. That should be gone in about a fortnight, with any luck. And they were horrid over-brined kippers. And I think I smell too, but I'll wait a bit before admitting defeat and chucking my clothes in the wash.

Gosh that was interesting, wasn't it?

The rest of the Australian Open final for now, then the final push on the room with The Drawer, so I can make a couple of garments to fit my current size. Perhaps if I cut them out Sod's Law will apply, and the steroid weight will just disappear.

Hope I am not going to muddy the waters too much here.

Firstly flat v house. Although I would always want a house I can understand having other choices. I have friends who tell me that in the future a flat will be ideal but I like a house and will stay in one as long as possible. Forever if I can. AC wants a flat and is bound to have reasons for it.

Secondly location. Poole has always seemed to be the desired location and if things go correctly there is no reason why it should not work. In 12 months time AC you could be in a flat you love, working part time, going to a couple of clubs and as already mentioned with new friends and enough money to have a good lifestyle.

South Shields and parts of the Midlands may be cheaper but if it is not the area wanted, why go there? Isn't it better to work out a budget for the life you want where you want to be?

There would also be the moving, storage and starting again element. It could be that 6 months is spent in South Shields with AC regretting it and wanting to go back to Poole.

I agree about budgets but is there any point sitting at home with money in the bank if you desperately wish you were elsewhere?

  • Thanks karonher. Glad to have you back :)
You seem to understand my situation . When I decided the move, my friend in Poole was scratching his head a bit . A few of the others understood .
Had a few ciders with my friend . He thinks I'm doing well so far .
I'm also not treading on his toes .
Flats = a London /southern thing imho because of price ..
Looking at the biggest picture : I'm still only 2 hours by train to London Waterloo . If I want to see a band in london, I can .
My family are 2 hours away. If something happened to them, I will be there for them . The local doctors I just joined has a really good reputation .
I forgot that I can meet up,with my friend who, lives in Southampton .
Apparently , it looks like I'll be going to brockenhurst every few weeks .
I'm intrrmediate level on bass guitar. I can read small amount of music.
Been in a few bands. My plan is to advertise for just jamming in a rehearsal room to get my confidence back.
I cannot see myself going anywhere else tbh. As you say , it'll be more upheaval which I don't really need or want at this time.

Good to see you have plans regarding music - I did wonder if you could get some paid work in pubs but didn't know what level you are.

I have been reading every day, but just not got round to posting everything.

    AC.

Let me get one thing straight.

I have never suggested you don't live in your preferred designated area merely that you expand your horizons beyond those few favoured streets that you are so focussed on.

All of us understand exactly why you have chosen the area, it's nice, it's by the coast, it's within easy reach of the bright lights and your family. It makes perfect sense.

I for one am completely on board with that.

Most of us merely throw out information about other areas to highlight just what is available if you are prepared to cast your net a little further.

You are the one who occasionally throws the idea of South Shuelds into the mix and again I understand that it's because you already have contacts there.

Yes it's only a few hours by train to London and the north east also has its own glorious traditions, fine cities such as Newcastle and Durham, a stunning coastline and glorious countryside. However I don't really "see" you there.

    So ........back to Poole.

Whilst I understand it's attractions what I don't get is why you keep trying to punch above your weight lusting after properties in a post code you just can't afford with no thought to your future well being.

I don't wish to be rude but you are 56. You may think retirement is a long way off and indeed it could well be. You may never have to actually retire as such. There is nothing to stop you working well past state retirement age. If you find your niche and love what you do there is no need to retire - ever. You can play music until you drop.

Look at the Rolling Stones....Geriatircs to a man and still grooving away:rotfl:

I know loads of people who continue to work well last retirment age, not because they have to for financial reasons but because they love what they do. They work the hours they wish and they take regular breaks and sabbaticals.

However, you may not be quite so fortunate. AC you must plan ahead - just in case your health does deteriorate further. Hopefully it won't but you really must be practical.

REalistically would five miles or so out make so much difference to your lifestyle, I doubt it very much. But it would make a huge difference as to what you could get for your budget, and spending a little less of your capital would ensure your future financial stability.

All that you have to bear in mind is that given that you don't drive then just be sure to pick somewhere with good transport links and with enough day to day amenities - shops, doctors, dentist, etc on your doorstep.

    It's not rocket science.

Re the music thing........as well as gigging there is also the internet.

There is a great book called "The Four Hour Week". I think the aithor is called Tom Ferris.

One of his case studies is a musician. I think you would find it interesting and it might give you some ideas as to how you could advance your musical career or sideline business.

When I read it I immediately thought of you and how you could benefit from some Of the tips and suggestions.

At any rate as well as live gigging it might be worth thinking about how you can harness technology to monetise your music.

Well given that my "One Year Challenge" is going to take some considerable effort on my part I have decided that from now on I shall be limiting My time on social media sites.

I am 65 and if I want to achieve my dream lifestyle I need to get a wiggle on......;)

Therefore although I will drop by from time to time I won't be available to impart my pearls of wisdom. :rotfl:

So.....farewell my friend. I wish you luck and joy on your journey.

Karonher - I agree with all of the points you have made in your excellent post. I certainly wasn't suggesting that AC should move anywhere else - I was just responding to his statement that money would dictate where he lived.
I also think that if he should buy what he wants - flat, house, campervan. If the flat the landlady is talking about turns out to be just what AC wants and he pays top price for it (even if I or anyone else think it is not the best decision) then as long as he has both eyes wide open (and brain in gear) I would be extremely pleased for him and wish him well. I just hate the thought that someone I have come to know through this thread, and greatly admire for having the courage to make the leap into the unknown, doesn't just give up and settle for the easy option when with a little more effort he could find something a bit cheaper. Money in the bank doesn't buy happiness I agree, but it does buy time. Time to be able to concentrate on getting fitter and time to look around and not just have to take the first job that comes along because he has run out. £20k is 2 years income to me so if I were in AC's shoes I would definitely be looking to save that on the property purchase.
However, they are only suggestions - not necessarily advice. I think it extremely unlikely, as AC is probably too polite, but he can tell me to take a running jump if he likes. I certainly won't be offended - my kids often listen politely to me then go of and do their own thing and I am happy to accept that my way is not the only way.
  • Thanks ll. only problem is iam 54:) Hopefully, by the time I'm 56 I will be settled . Good luck on your new life also :)
  • Thanks again everyone. Everything seems depressing on here today.
That's mainly due to the landlady, and her flat for sale etc.
I think we all should lighten up,somewhat. The weather is miserable enough as it is .
I'm gonna focus on the two places tomorrow and Tuesday , and see what gives. Please feel free to continue .
    Thanks

AC - please don't feel depressed. It may be raining outside (well it is here) but I have always thought your thread was a good place. It has a serious side admittedly, but I would say that everyone is on your side in their own ways. That's the difficulty, we all have our own experiences and suggestions but ultimately it is your life, your choice. You are certainly old enough to make your own decisions, and young enough to be brave in making them (even if LL has "aged" you by 2 years).
Off to watch Homeland on catch-up and do more knitting if the cat will leave me alone. He has gone very needy since his teeth op.
