  • Thanks all. Waiting for train home . Specialist remembered my plans.
    Totally supportive .
He thinks I'll be weaned off all medication ,in the not too distant.

Regarding Poole tomorrow . Has to be done . I'll get over it .
Thursday will be the more stressful I think.
Getting the flat cleaned is another thing .
Other than that . Things should be fine once I buy more crates and wrap and finish the job today
  • Am I reading it right that Toxic brother has hired his mate to do some work for him and he has hired a big van to get his jobs done (that have been promised, so van can't be cancelled) and low and behold you need some help. TB gets his jobs done for £300 where it should be a 70/30 split. I know he's family but you'll be well shot of him.

Not the time to say but when I had to clear my late brother's flat I found a husband and wife house clearance team who took the lot even carpets. They sell on anything of value - car boots, ebay, clothing cash converters etc, recycle other stuff and dump the grot. No charge at all. They make their money from selling on.

I'm sorry I didn't remember this in time, it was a few years ago.

Good luck. This time next week you'll be strolling along the beach!

Yes there are lots of companies like this. And good luck to them. Lots of charities who will pick stuff up too.

My removal guy will cherry pick the best items to sell on.....I have no problem with this. I get a good deal, (last load he shifted for me was £40 - my share of the tip fee) He makes a bit more money and it doesn't all end up in landfill. Win-win-win all round.

When he does a job for me I let my plumber keep any old copper - copper fetches good prices at the moment. He too sorts out the good metals and anything reusable. It all gets passed on....often I have been the beneficiary of anything he has picked up and vice versa.

The owners here left some nice garden ornaments. I didn't like them but plumber does buy to lets so I let him take them for one of his projects.

I love doing deals like this....it's fun and of course it saves me shedloads of money.

AC. I am truly gobsmacked at some of the figures you have been quoted. I don't know whether folk are trying it on with you or whether these are genuine London prices.

From £250 for a one off clean. I would expect between £50 and £100 for a two bed flat (no exterior windows).

    I pay £7 for 8 windows and 2 doors.

I would expect to pay a cleaner a maximum of £15 per hour. And I usually pay around £40 for rubbish removal. The most I have ever paid was £70 and there was a lot.

I think your big problem is you haven't shopped around enough and you havenet forward planned. This is costing you.

I think you will find Poole is going to be easier on your wallet and hopefully you will have learned from this move how to make the next one cheaper and easier.
  • Good to hear that th consultant is happy with your progress. That has to be a relief for you.

    This time next week.........;)
  • Once again you have totally ignored my post and have not addressed any of the issues. You really are an ostrich.

1.....you do not need to go to Poole......a total waste of time, effort and money,

    2. You are still spending money on crates and packaging. I bet you are paying full retail.

    3. You are still agonising about rubbish removal. It will only be stressful if you make it so.

    4. And why haven't you started cleaning........you should be doing the oven and kitchen cupboards today, spreading the load instead of leaving it all till the last minute.

You are making life so difficult for yourself and it is all so totally unnecessary.

    I give up.:rotfl:

    I'll leave you to it.
  • Thanks all
Will read last few postings properly later.
Reason I have to go to poole tomorrow , is to buy a padlock etc
Also it may not be a bad idea incase the storage room is too small.

Twickenham is in the London borough of Richmond .one of the most expensive parts of the country . This may have something to do with it.

After the rubbish is dumped, the place has to be cleaned . Only fair.

There is onebizarre thing that goes my way . My season tkt(oyster) expires on Monday of all days . This means that the cost of the Poole trips is a lot less. You get a discount if you have a gold card . So that's something
  • Hi AC - sorry we all sound like we are nagging but you really DON'T need to go to Poole to buy a padlock - as LL said, get the moving men to do that. I'm sure if storage is too small they can arrive (with your approval over the phone) for a larger one.

i would be at home scrubbing the place clean, dropping keys off and getting that sorted

Have you purchased a network railcard for £1 while you still have you season ticket active? worth doing as it'll save a fortune in the future
  • Thanks all

I too am sure AC that you really do not need to go to Poole tomorrow. You could just buy a padlock in twickenham and give to storage people tomorrow. If room is too small I am sure that can be overcome without you being there but this has been done to death so we have alerted you to other possibilities and it is up to you if you take suggestions on board.

If you have access to cheap train tickets due to your oyster card that is at least one MSE thing you have taken advantage of so that is good.

One final suggestion and this is meant kindly with concern for your new future. You do seem to spend money without thinking too deeply about cheaper options and just go for what you see as the easiest option. You will receive a very large amount of money next week and inevitably you will want to spend some as you have already indicated on a new bed, bits and pieces of new kitchen gadgets etc. You do not have an unlimited budget though as that money needs to buy you a home, cover your expenses while you are not working (who knows for how long) and clear your not inconsiderable debt. My advice is before you splurge look at options rather than just reaching for the credit card or debit card and shop around as LL has suggested. Being MSE has stood many of us in good stead over the years. Use this forum to save money on your purchases, there is great advice on it. Don't be taken in by smart talking salesman looking for quick sales. Also ditch your brother after this move. He sounds like a user and a waste of space and has not helped you in the slightest over the last 8 years and has in fact made things more difficult for you.

Apologies for going on about this but I had some bad news this morning and a similar situation with my brother who suffers from ms. Having just got back from a golfing holiday with his so called mates he has suffered a major relapse due to his mates making him do all the driving over in Spain plus play golf every day in spite of him knowing he has to rest. The whole family warned him not to let his mates take advantage and to have rest days in between golf matches but yet again they have. So cross with them and him to take his health condition so lightly!!

You may not have easy access to internet over the next week or so and I wish you all the best for your coming move and new life. I look forward to hearing all about it in the coming months.

Not going to add to all the sensible advice.

LL - just wanted to say how amazingly impressive your debt clearance is, and at a time when life had pulled the rug from under you.

Smodlet - sorry I failed to add 'right back atcha'.

Enthusiasticsaver - sorry to hear about your brother. I know how difficult it is to say No with a chronic illness. People just don't get it.

AC - hope the week goes well, and that you keep in touch. Keep a tight hold on the purse strings!
