' hope you are still ok for Thursday .if the lorry needs paying can my brother pay for it ,and I pay my brother next week ?'
I phoned the guy and can't get him .
The answer is either yes or no. In my text I also apologised for misunderstanding .they happen I said .
I've got Hosp appt at 930
Also ,the guy is doing a few jobs for my brother anyway.

I won't go for move and rubbish run on the same day..way too stressful
  • I cannot believe the price of getting things done in London compared to rest of the country. £450 for rubbish removal!! We would get change from £100 for a half days work down here for a man and a van. Sooner you are out of that overpriced city AC the better.

    AC. I'm confused......

Wednesday........your goods and chattels go to Poole, to a lock up, yes??

You go down with them to purchase a lock and show your ID.

Why can't they furnish a lock and you pay for it. They can hold the key for you until you are ready to pick it up.

ID. Can you not scan this and send it online. You can always show them the hard copy when you pick up your keys.

I really don't understand the need for you to go traipsing down to Poole.

Thursday. ..... rubbish removal day, Yes??

Brothers mate supposedly doing rubbish. Yes??

Original quote for rubbish. £300 but they are now trying to "renegotiate". yes???

Why. What's is the reason, have they got extra costs. Is there more rubbish than they thought.

Where will the rubbish be, is it ready. You mention stuff needing to be dismantled, something about shelving unit in loft?.

When he quoted for the job was brothers mate aware he needed to dismantle your stuff and get things out of the loft.?

Did you speak with brothers mate to tell him what was involved or was your brother the go between. Did his mate quote blind, without inspecting your property and seeing exactly how much stuff you had, and asses what exactly what was involved.

Do you see why I am asking. It could be that there is a lot more work involved and a lot more time required than he originally quoted for.

Generally when you get rubbish removed it is "ready to go" dismantled and neatly stacked in the most convenient place. Flats will always be more difficult because generally there is no outside space to put it all.

You are requiring an additional service i.e. Dismantling which could be time consuming, so it is not unreasonable for a carrier to charge extra.

I am guessing this has all been arranged by your brother and that he has drip fed information to his mate as and when you revealed more about what he needed to do. His mate made assumptions about the nature of the job and has only recently been informed of the add on services you require.

If this is indeed the case then a request for extra money is not unreasonable. (Depending of course on how much extra).

You have until Monday to vacate - it's still not too late to make other arrangements.

TBH. It all sounds like a right dogs breakfast. Everything is convoluted and messy. Keep it simple.

You have two choices......go with your brothers mate or find someone else.

A tip for the future....... never use friends of friends for a business transaction and always deal directly with someone, never with an intermediary. And especially don't lean on family to help you unless you absolutely have no choice.

I once relied on my father to organise a self drive van. He drove down in it. It was a disaster - it was too small. My poor husband then had to do two trips. It was a 3 hour each way drive.

In the confusion my 14 month old son fell out of his push chair, banging his head and ripping off one off his fingers nails.

I was furious, my dad was whinging because I hadn't cooked him a meal and had only made him a sandwich. I had planned to give him a snack, load up and then we would go for lunch. How he thought I would be able to cook a meal on moving day.....

The kids were fractious and upset, my poor husband was beyond exhaustion, my poor baby was badly injured whilst father was behaving like a Prima Donna as usual, stomping around, ranting and raving. Stuff got broken and lost.

To cap it all My father had paid over the odds for the van (from a mate!!!) and we spent a Small fortune on the extra mileage, food and snacks.

For what we paid, We could have got the professionals in, hubby could have just supervised whilst I took the kids to a nice hotel.

    you live and learn......:rotfl:

So final figure for brothers mate is £600. yes?? other quotes from £450.

TBH. Sounds like brothers mate fee isn't far out then.

Yes London prices do seem eye watering but it doesn't look like you have much choice. You are just going to have to grin and bear it.

Good news about the blood pressure. Means your body is coping with the stress.

This time next week it will be over.

Ps. Don't pay your brother in instalments. Just pay in full and have done with it. Start your new life as you mean to go on......no debts, no grudges, no hang ups, no bitterness......just a nice clean slate.

Otherwise what's the point........surely the whole object of the exercise is a fresh start and a new interesting happy stress free life.
  • If it all falls through with brother's mate, then you could try contacting these guys for rubbish removal:

    https://www.anyjunk.co.uk/national-waste-disposal

I haven't used them for a number of years, but back when I did, they cleared a lawn mower, a BBQ, some broken garden furniture and about 20 black sacks for close on £100 (from memory - could be more, could be less).

The guys I had worked efficiently. The only problem was they said their card machine wasn't working. Whether its true or not, they were lucky I had enough cash on me to cover the cost.
  • Sorry, I may have missed some posts etc but if he can't cancel the van and the whole cancellation is costing you £600 why not use the van & brother's friend in some way on Thursday, even if for the tip run and you have to pay to dump stuff, you have to anyway. That way you're done and dusted on Thursday.

I also agree with LL about why you need to be in Poole tomorrow, I'm amazed with current technology & communications you need to be there.

It does sound like it's getting terribly messy when it could be simple.

Your earlier post about making F&F offers, there was mention of your review in January. Why wait until then, if you have the money now then make those offers now, sooner they are cleared the better surely?
  • Am I reading it right that Toxic brother has hired his mate to do some work for him and he has hired a big van to get his jobs done (that have been promised, so van can't be cancelled) and low and behold you need some help. TB gets his jobs done for £300 where it should be a 70/30 split. I know he's family but you'll be well shot of him.

Not the time to say but when I had to clear my late brother's flat I found a husband and wife house clearance team who took the lot even carpets. They sell on anything of value - car boots, ebay, clothing cash converters etc, recycle other stuff and dump the grot. No charge at all. They make their money from selling on.

I'm sorry I didn't remember this in time, it was a few years ago.

Good luck. This time next week you'll be strolling along the beach!
  • If I had a debt like this I too would want it cleared asap.

When my husband got sick we racked up £30k, despite flogging off most of our assets to stay afloat. I didn't fret over it because I had bigger fish to fry - caring for my husband was my top priority.

When I was able I cleared all the debt, every last penny. Most of it was interest free so I made no attempt to get it reduced. I had spent the money so I was happy to pay it all back. It felt great.

AC. There is no greater feeling than being debt free......you will feel so much lighter, the sense of freedom and liberation is wonderful.

Once you have funds just clear everything, you will feel like you have been reborn. Dont hang on to the money you owe your brother out of spite and revenge.

And pay off your DMP. Obviously try and negotiate yourself a good deal but please don't get hung up on this. You spent the money so you need to pay back what is required.

    Render unto Caesar........and all that.
