  • Regarding pensions: I have 2 . Not expecting much, because I paid a fairly small amount and I was consistent . I made a potentially naive mistake by transferring one to another back in the early 2000's
I have a pension in this company I'm quitting .
When working again,I will take advice and sort.
When settled I will find out how much I actually expect when 65.
    Could be worse:)

Some good points raised, and duly noted:)
Can't see me doing a cookery class tho '. Peel an onion
and I vomit.and of course the garlic :)

Let's move on from the Nero inquisition please :)
I wouldn't buy a place with tenant in situ TBH . I was surprised by the price :)

They may want a quick sale AC. Both my daughters are selling their houses at the moment. One sold fairly quickly to a cash buyer but my other one says the market has gone dead so perhaps that is why price is reduced. You will be in an excellent position as cash buyer when you do find somewhere. If you buy somewhere with tenant in just check notice period - sometimes it is just one month and it will take 6-8 weeks minimum for legal side to be done.

You can cook with other ingredients than onions and garlic ;)

AC I notice you've always prefered the option of a flat. Any reason for this? I think it's important to remember why you wanted to move and what your dream future looks like. I think resale on flats is fine in my experience, the service charge does need careful consideration but moving away from prefered location into a property that would also be a compromise might not be for you. But an open mind (which I know you've got in bucket loads) will really help you over the next few months.

You must be so excited! You have so many options.

TBH , I'm not sure what I can afford because of my preferred location so far. If I do get a house, it'll probably be luck .
If I get a flat , I prefer upstairs as ground floor seems easy to burgle and upstairs has better views.
I feel that my health will improve . This time last year ( for a few months iirc) I was walking like a 9o year old man getting off the trains etc. My walking is much better . I know this sounds weird, but I more or less deliberately left myself go until I move ,as I knew I had to have a clean start from scratch .
    We'll see:)

I certainly agree that lack of pension provision is acceptableential problem not just for covering service charges but other bills. Not all flats come with extortioissues would be thereate service charges though and they are cheaper than houses so I would not rule them out totally. The health issues and job prospects would be an issue if he bought a house too.

When you are sorted accommodation wise AC come over to pensions and savings boards and join us there to prepare for retirement.

Not wishing to be rude Enthusiastic, but have you read the whole thread and researched property prices and availability in the area of Poole AC desires to move to?

Flats in that area are not cheap by any means, and within 3-5 mile radius a perfectly acceptable 2 bed freehold house can be had for the same money and no ongoing costs. Yes the same health and job Issues would still be there in a house, but the ongoing expenditures certainly wouldn't!

Anyhow I think we should maybe rein the discussion back to helping AC with the immediate matters of moving out and finding short term accommodation, everything else can wait until after the move.
  • It's been a while since I posted, but I am so glad that I made it back to check on progress. Congratulations AC.

Lot of sensible suggestions from people, but mostly things that you can think about once you're out of London. Re storage, I left my stuff in a facility in Edinburgh, because I didn't know how permanent our first accommodation would be. If you're going to be somehwere for a few days, then renting short term, you probably want to leave it in storage until you buy. Make sure everything is labelled, and you can make sure that it is stored in such a way that the things you are most likely to want/need are near the front. I found someone on AnyVan to move my stuff - I was a bit worried about him going to collect my stuff without me being there, but it seems this is a fairly regular occurrence, so the storage facility and the removal company don't have a problem with that.

I reckon you could probably treat yourself to one of those fancy coffee machines and still save compared to the cafe visits, but you'll have time to learn to make your own too. And you'll have time to learn to cook - there are so many simple, tasty, healthy recipes. I suspect there is a thread on here somewhere just for that sort of thing. And being single is no excuse - just so long as you have a freezer.

You could try contacting the B&B you like in Poole to see if you can get a weekly rate, especially as it's not holiday season now, and you have stayed before. Its only a few days, but being somewhere familiar might just make it all a bit less daunting.

    Good luck :-)

Not rude at all Harz ;)

I have read the full thread and yes the Lower Parkstone area is expensive for both flats and houses. There are certainly more flats than houses and they are cheaper but as you say if he goes further out there is more choice and more houses but he seems reluctant to consider this at the moment.

I think this may be because he is used to living in a flat in London, he knows the Parkstone area because his friend lives nearby and he does not drive. He may change his mind once he is living there. He has plenty of time to decide though.

    Wahoo.....last week at work.:j:j:j

Enjoy the anticipation of finishing on Friday and the beginning of your new life.

Be kind and gracious to those you are leaving behind. Remember you are escaping, they are stuck.

You are the lucky one, so play nice. :D
  • Listen to LL AC and be gracious and amenable. You will need a reference if you are to take on a new part time job in Poole so best to part on good terms. You only have one week left so whatever grudges you have can be left behind.

Right off to play with my one year old granddaughter who we have on a Monday. Nothing like kids to put the world to rights ;)
