Smodlet......I miss our old family house too, but needs must.
And it nearly broke my husband's heart to have to sell our apartment in Spain. By then we knew he was dying. It was an admission of defeat.0 -
AC, how about expanding your search just a little? Still within Bournemouth/Poole but further out from the centre? Reason? Town centres = drunken idiots, antisocial behaviour down to and including using your outside wall as a urinal. I totally understand harz's thinking of starting at the railway station and working outwards but I have yet to encounter a station in a "good" part of a town. They are, of necessity close to but on the edge of town centres and tend to be in less desirable areas for the simple reason that most people, Londoners excepted, think living near a railway line, let alone a station is the pits. What me? A snob? You betcha, by golly, wow, why do you think I hate it here so much?

Idle fingers Smodlet? This one has the distinct advantage of being a house, presumably freehold with no ongoing fees to worry about, and is also very close to Castlepoint. May well be a lot of rented property in that area due to the main Hospital being nearby.
Looks in good shape though, and some bus routes nearby.0 -

AC, one thing has been bugging me today, and that is how you would fund the initial costs of buying alongside selling?
You will need a substantial deposit ready for exchange time of around 10% which looks to be somewhere between £19k and £23k, probably some other disbursements, and also at least your removal costs to fund as well. All this before you benefit from the proceeds of your completed sale.
I apologise if that sounds a bit personal, but I'm concerned that we are steering you towards these still pretty expensive properties, without considering all the implications for you.0 -
Idle? Moi? Out of them all, LL, it is the only one I would consider for two seconds! I did say it was the mystery house, fgs, the whole point being, it is a house so no damn maintenance charges, freehold and the crime stats are a tiny fraction of those in these presumably more fashionable areas. I'd be afraid to go out of my own front door in most of them.
I will never understand why anyone in AC's position would dream of living in a flat. Flats are for people who can't afford houses, imo, that is why we moved here; we would have been lucky to find a one bed in the worst part of town where we were... no wonder I am rubbish at finding things for him to look at, but that does not mean only you and harz and GG are allowed to try. If I had £220k, I would buy our old house back. So there. That was a Smodlet Strop.

I was hoping that the positive equity would take care of everything.
It did last time, but that was 14 years ago.

Interesting question smodlet houses v flats .
I suppose , it comes down to money& location.( Ie : London hse prices shocking.The further north , for example - the cheaper the property).

Flats - v - houses.
At the beginning of my search I looked at several fiats, some of which were very smart. However, I have ruled them out, usually because of issues of maintenance, poor sound Insulation, Difficulties of reselling
For me a House comes out top every time. I like having full autonomy for maintenance and not having to rely on anyone else or having to stick to someone else's time schedules.
