Yes - I'm on that thread. I recycle washing whitener pots to use for saving. Cut a hole in the lid carefully, screw lid back on and tape up with whatever you have to hand. Also non-breakable if you drop it when it gets heavy ;)

Great idea, Lynne:T. I had a lot of the large size of those bright pink laundry-treatment tubs (can't remember what the stuff inside was called now, I haven't used it for a few years:o). Saved the empties in the shed for yonks 'just in case' and finally gave them to OH to take to the tip when he was taking a carload of other recycling stuff in the summer. Doh:o

    Evening all :hello:

Sorry I've been missing but my DS is here for a few days holiday from Ibiza so a bit time-poor.

    Re the money-saving/making ideas.

I have envelopes for all the different budgets each month such as petrol, groceries, wine etc. I have the total amount allocated to each category written on the top of the envelope.

I keep all my receipts on a paperclip each month. At the end of the month I total all the receipts under each category on a large sheet of paper. On each envelope I add the allocated amount and deduct the amount spent, thus showing the +/- balance in each.

If an envelope is heading into the negative I know I must have a good think about our spending in that area. Hope that makes sense :rotfl:

    Lynne
I hope you are having a wonderful time with DS:T. I bet he's missing the Ibiza weather though;)

You're so organised with your envelope system:A. Do you put actual money in the envelopes at the start of the month or just use them for the receipts and paperwork? Sorry if I'm a bit dim:o. I keep thinking I might try the envelope system as I tend to use cash for most things nowadays and having the actual money for each category there upfront and seeing it go down:eek: would be a big help. Thanks.

Love the idea of a separate 'budget' for wine by the way:rotfl:.

Think there is a thread somewhere CBC with the envelope system.

You take out your weekly allowance, and then put into each envelope the required amount, ie £20 petrol money envelope a, £10 school dinner money, £100 shopping money, etc.

Then at the end of the week you see what is left, hopefully something, but even if nothing, it helps you budget and not overspend.

These days I tend to use my debit card more than cash so I don't have much change for the sealed pot challenge and if I have no cash I take from DH until I have money of my own. So this system doesn't work for me at the moment.

I was wondering that too but thought maybe they didn't want to say because it's an open forum.

But well done Procastinater for whatever it is! :T

It's just such a shame ebay and paypal take so much in fees. We would all be millionaires otherwise.

    I agree with that, Aesop:T

Amazon is just the same for high fees:eek: but I stick with them because it's mainly books that I sell and I like the whole listing procedure and ease of use.

Already been to the Post Office to post 3 books all sold last night. A couple of them had been listed for about 18 months but as they stay listed forever until they sell it was no problem. I had trouble locating one of them though, it was in the bottom box of a large stack and boxes of books are very heavy:(. One of the others sold for £32 so I was well-pleased with that one. A nice start to December's challenge when I get the money.:j

I alternate between the cash envelope for groceries and putting money in a different account so I don't go over budget. I use cash 70% of the time but for shops where I need heavy stuff I do an online one to be delivered (I don't drive so cash days are take your shopping trolley to the shops day).

I find it makes a HUGE difference to how well I keep within our food budget.
