Vent at morrisons

Was looking forward to a good evening carving a pumkin with my grandaughter tonight, that was untill i got to the till to pay for my shopping.
Then i discovered that the neat little kids pumkin carving set (found amongst all the other kids halloween items) i picked off the shelf was "age restricted" and, as I had said grandaughter with me, I was unable to purchase it!
Even the checkout staff were supprised that an item aimed at youngsters was restricted....

Still no real harm done we will just have to carve her pumkin with my trusty (but not rusty) kitchen knife instead (with the expected adult supervision)

Knives have been age restricted for a very long time.

Indeed knives have been restricted (with all good intentions) however this item does NOT have a knife in it!
So why aim an item at kids if you can not buy it with them. Even Morrisons description suggests the item is suitable for age 8 upwards..

Theres quite clearly a knife in the packet! Referred to as a carving saw, it doesn't say the item is suitable for eight year olds just that an eight year old can use it with supervision, just like any other knife.

My five year old uses steak knifes, I don't expect her to be able to buy one.

Surely adults are allowed to buy knives, even though they are parents or grandparents? The OP was with her grand-daughter so is unlikely to be under-age.

The grandchild wasn't buying the set though the OP was..

Do supermarkets not sell alcohol to a shopper if they have an under 18 with them?, what about DVD's or CD's that aren't age appropriate?

    The world has gone mad!!!!!

I don't know if it has changed but when I worked in a shop the rule (not a shop policy) was that if a person was buying an age restricting item for someone who was underage I wasn't allowed to sell it. Therefore even if OP had mentioned it was for little one I would have been able to buy it.

We would commonly have children refused for fags, their angry parents would then become angrier when we couldn't sell them the product instead.

It does sound like a bonkers policy.

Does it mean that people shopping with their kids - say during half-term - can't put a 4 pack of beer in their trolley?

I believe you can't buy alcohol if the person serving you thinks it's for someone underage.

I imagine the server thought this was for the child who was with you so correctly followed the right procedure.

What is ridiculous is the fact the product is clearly aimed at children but children are too young to buy it.
  • I've ordered one of these (just arrived) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0153CZUBI

Even includes an LED light to use instead of a candle, for £3.99 delivered.

Shame you couldn't pop back without the grandchild and get the carving set
