If I did write a will and leave it half/half then one'd spend it all on stuff (sibling) and the other would probably have it piled in the bank account (half sibling), until such future point as the sibling ended up with it anyway.

If you write a will, you don't have to leave them anything.

What about friends or charities who could benefit from your estate?

I booked an appointment for next month to get my first will drawn up.

I never used to care about what happened to my estate after death as I always hoped to have spent all my money before then but recent events and health scares have changed my mind.
I still don't particularly care who gets the money just as long as the taxman/government doesn't get any :)

No friends. I did think about leaving it to the RNLI ... maybe name a boat after me :)

Had a quick look at how much RNLI boats cost ... there's probably enough to buy them a small one.

These free wills - you have to be 55 and over. And it's full/closed in most areas until next year.

I think this thread therefore needs my: Pointless Thread of the Day Award....
  • No I don't, I plan to arrange one when I buy my first house and then obviously change it as and when my circumstances change.

What about Will Aid in your area?

You have to register on the Will Aid site before you can search for solicitors in your area that do it, which has put me off using it.
My OH gets free wills for himself and a partner through his Unite membership though so we're going to get it sorted out soon. It's been on our to do list for a while but more important than ever now we've bought a house.

Edit: and I've just seen you have to be 55 or over to get a free will as part of will aid. How is that supposed to encourage young people to take it seriously then??

We do have mirror wills. We had them drawn up by a solicitor recommended by a trusted friend before travelling half around the world to attend our only child's beautiful wedding almost four years ago. They superseded previous wills. We also have an agreement between us that should my husband pre-decease me, if I am still working I will make an allowance to one of his relatives, after tax, from his pension, which would revert to me. Amount/percentage is at my discretion, just a gift to help the relative along. I'm thinking I should get that in writing from my husband as it could potentially be considered a purposeful diminution of my assets were I to need care.

I have got one but i've been meaning to rip it up for years. The people who are in i don't want to get anything now. The thing that has put me off writing another is i'm not sure who i can have, or who i want as the Executor. I think it may have to be the bank or solicitor.

  • It's a delicate subject that some people don't want to think about. I feel anything that gets people talking, or even thinking about it is worthwhile posting :)
