Wills are especially important if you have a young family. Have you made one?

It's Free Wills Month this month and Will Aid is coming up in November. It's worth checking if there's availability in your area.

Yes. Wills are important whatever your age. I am in my 20s and have a will. It is important to be clear on your wishes.

If you are buying a house and not married please get a will. If you buy a house and own it as tenants in common, please get a will. Also, even if you do not think you need a will (value or you are happy with the intestacy rules) but have children please still consider making one to appoint formal guardians for your children.

I understand that making a will makes you consider things you don't always want to think about, especially whilst young, but they are important.

    Lecture over.

The Religious Society of Friends (aka Quakers) feel everyone should have a Will as dying intestate is considered very bad manners. (!)

My Scottish grandfather, whenever he drew up a will, advised sorting POA at the same time, as it was little extra work or expense for a great deal more peace of mind.

In these turbulent times, if you can have a will in contemplation of marriage, can you have a will in contemplation of divorce? Or is that a prenup?

I don't. I don't have children (and won't be having any either) and my house is mine, not jointly owned with anyone. I don't really care what happens to it when I've gone.

Someone will have to sort out your estate.

It will make their lives much easier if you have a will.

I never had one, I figured "if I die intestate, there's enough stuff to sell to cover any costs ... and what's left will go to my parents"

Now I have no parents I suddenly realised that the same rule won't apply to my siblings. I have a full sibling and a half sibling. If I don't make a will then the full sibling would get the lot.

On the other hand, both are wealthier than me and neither of them need the money by any stretch of the imagination. While there'd probably be a bit of lip chomping that I'd not made one and that only one sibling had got the lot (she wouldn't share, it's not in her nature) .... it won't be my problem and nobody will suffer.

If I did write a will and leave it half/half then one'd spend it all on stuff (sibling) and the other would probably have it piled in the bank account (half sibling), until such future point as the sibling ended up with it anyway.
