It ASTOUNDS me how anyone could write such an absurd statement. Yes the E46 M3 is still a better machine overall purely as a car compared to the Focus. We haven't gone through a technological transformation in the past decade where new cars like the Focus uses quantum mechanics. Cars still rely on good old fashion thermodynamics and electronics. Still 1's and 0's and combustion cycles. Because manufacturers add gadgets like DAB or whatever doesn't make them cutting edge technology. For things that actually matter the E46 M3 triumphs the Focus - ever heard of forged Pistons? Forged engine internals using lighter strong alloys? The Focus cannot hold a candle light to the E46 M3.
It astounds me that anybody could believe something engineered in the late 90's is in any way comparable to a vehicle engineered in the last few years.
From a simple performance point of view take the 0-60 time
It is hardly any faster than a current 2015 Range Rover Vogue DIESEL from 0-60.
Times move on. Technology advances
Back in 04 I bought a WRX, non STi, it was pretty quick for its time, now it is average.
If you want to discuss technological features then you would need to look at the Mitsubishi Evo of the time as that was chock full of tech.
An M3 is just a fast 3 Series. Like the M5 they are very nice and all that but just like the M5 of that time they are old fashioned and rather quaint now.
Hopefully some are preserved by owners of substance rather than driven into the ground by morons and dreamers that actually think having one in some way alters their socioeconomic position in life.0 -
And you're also wrong when you say everything was an option the E46 M3. No it wasn't. As base trim it pretty much had every feature except for SMG gearbox and BMW Sat Nav. As stock it had cruise control, heated leather seats and steering wheel, 18 speakers and mini sub woofer harmon kardon...the list goes on...
Yawn.
Is it lunchtime yet.

It happened across the whole site - I think something got corrupted in a style-sheet or similar behind-the-scenes stuff.gilbert_and_sullivan wrote: »Has something gone wrong with my PC or all all of you struggling to read the first three posts on this page, many letters appear to have been replaced with exclamation marks, my eyes my eyes0 -

The E46 M3 does 0-60 in 5 seconds, with many reported times of 4.8-4.9 seconds. Which Range Rover Evoque even comes close to this time?? Add to the fact that the E46 M3 wasn't built for straight line speed. It was design to go fast around a track.
I'm sure in your head cars of the latest generation in the same price bracket and class as a '15 Focus have near enough the same performance as a E46 M3 as they're "leaps" ahead in technology using quantum mechanics. Do you know what quantum mechanics is? In one of your previous posts you suggested cars of today use quantum mechanics.
Hi Dark Matter thanks for outing another of your sign in names.
Did watch Wheeler Dealer last night and the Noble featured is likely far superior to an M3 from a handling and performance stand point.
But of course you will think it is no good due to the humble Mondeo engine and lack of "extras"
Not built for straight line speed eh? A Noble would embarrass one round a Track and to be honest point to point on a fast A Road an Evo would leave it in a hedge.
Lol
Care to explain your use of the term Quantum Mechanics?
Without the use of Google or Wikipedia that is!
Please learn to read a little better.
I never mentioned the Evoque.
Since when is Vogue spelled Evoque.
Now go and check the performance figures for a 2015 Range Rover Vogue with the 3.0D engine (over 300bhp now) or the V8 Supercharged versions. Don't bother with stuff like Overfinch as they are really just a brand name owned by Kahn Customs I believe.0 -
If you poke him a bit he does go a bit doesn't he.
Let's be honest the engine in the M3 is not even as advanced as the 1.0 Ecoboost in the Focus!!!!!!0
