  • Ooooooooh - think w have decided to do it either tonight or tomorrow! Although weather looks pants and we are jumping on Sunday! Awwwwww - want to do it but need to be fresh to do it properly!!!!! SO excited!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I'm also a short, fat, middle-aged bat :) you'll be fine!

How long have you been running for? Shouldn't the timber be falling off?
WannaB - if you have not run before, the BIGGEST tip I can give is pace yourself. Take walking breaks. You will want to run fast but there's nothing more demotivating than finding out you can't do more than 20 seconds, then getting shin splints or pulled muscles and having to take time out. I used a plan like this when I first started: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k-plan.aspx and I could slowly jog 5k after 6-7 weeks.

I have, but primarily when i was between 18 and 20 then i had a break and got back into it when i was more like 24, then had another break but i am now nearly 28.

I used to run relatively far distances and fast, but for a lot of the time i had a running partner who was joining the military, so it rubbed off on me a bit. I remember after i had been training with him for a few months we did a 100m sprint and it was pretty much a draw :D even though he was taller and stronger than me.

But i don't want to over do it and injure myself.
I will admit to eating McD's breakfast snack wraps but the rest of their food is minging :(

Yep, and it makes your stuff smell funny, if you know what i mean.
(You know running won't give you a six-pack, right? And a six-pack is no indicator of strength either? )

I'm not so sure, i read that everyone has one it is about getting your body fat levels right and running helps to burn the calories. But this will be a mixture of running and press ups and sit ups and i will see what happens then. You also need to eat lots of meat everyday.
Apparently they are doing more races next year! So you can join us on one of those :)

Once my EE sim comes with 100gb of free data a month i will have a good play with it and let you know if i like it or not. Think i will get scared and end up running into a busy road to be honest.

Ha ha - Its not that scary and I am a big scaredy cat!

HBS - Hubby ran "Alternates" mission last night - the one that made me cry and he came back in and send he had run his fastest for a long time because he was so angry at the bunch of "victims" and no wonder they were all eaten by zombies! LOL - Dont think he is feeling the emotion there!

If its any consolation I threw something at him for being a complete unfeeling git! :-) Makes me so cross that he is literally running nearly twice my speed though - I know he is a lot taller and has a bigger stride, but every time i try to speed up i hurt myself. Have now resigned myself to 10% faster chases and an average pace of 12ish mins per mile!! Ah well - not bad for somebody in her 40's that only started running because she got diagnosed with MS I suppose! Not going to win any races, but I am most definitely having fun and feeling fitter and healthier than I have my entire life!

About 8 weeks? ;) Admittedly I'm also built like a brick !!!!!!-house and do a LOT of weightlifting as well - I've been told I look solid rather than fat. A friend weighs the same as me and is a full 3 dress sizes bigger :)

Ick :( mind you, so does Quorn...

Don't forget to plank and stretch! Get those core muscles solid :) and yep protein is your friend.

You can pause a mission at a road :) or turn chases off if you just want the story.

    Happy purple responses above :D

Woah, so you lift weights :D what made you start doing that??? Are you a fitness trainer for a living or something?

Ps, what makes you eat quorn? Cheap protein or a veggie?

I remember my PE teacher going through the stretches, it's about one of the only things i remember well from school for some reason.
  • I'm a scientific engineer for a living :) I started lifting weights because I'm naturally quite strong and figured in might be fun - which it absolutely is! I lost a bit when I started just running, but getting it back now :)

(I also have two other very physical hobbies and like cake, hence not being slim. Horses for courses!)

Re Quorn, I prefer to do bolognese with it as if I eat beef it's usually in the form of a very rare steak. Can't seem to get down with beef mince!

Sounds like an interesting job, you must be pretty clever?

Sounds like you have your fitness work outs all set up, but you haven't managed to tackle the diet bit yet :money:

When i started eating healthier i stopped buying cake or doughnuts, anything with high fat concentration i don't eat. I know i am missing out on multiple mouthgasms. Cake is so nice and there are so many different types..

My diet is really boring :D

    You would hate it.

So far today i think i have had about 100g of mixed nuts and two sweet portatos with 2 cans of tuna and onion mixed in :D

Dinner is probably chicken salad :rotfl:

Although i always get tempted to have a takeaway on a Friday because when i was growing up my dad always used to order a curry and i used to have some of it.

Some bad stuff is good for us though, right!

Well, went for my first run in years tonight ladies.

I set up the first level of zombies run, listened to them talking for a bit and set up my capital radio app and proceeded to jog.

I was striding away thinking 'this is easy' and running pretty fast, probably too fast. I encountered my first person / people on the pavement pretty quickly and didn't really pay much attention because i had my new wireless headphones in so i don't feel as self conscious as i thought i may.

After the first 1km which according to the zombies app took me 5 minutes (is that good i can't remember?) it very quickly went down hill.

My breathing is all messed up, i forgot how difficult it was to get back into running, your lungs have to learn again. I then walked for a few minutes and decided to head back.

Then i realised i had a little niggle on my left hip, and injury from overdoing it in the gym years ago so i have that to contend with as well as trying to breath without dying.

As i walked home i continued to listen to the zombie run app and my music, when the longer speaking comes on my capital app stops and i have to restart it when they finish speaking.

After about 20 mins i was nearly home and then they said 'zombies detected' or words to that effect and i heard the scary grunts which instantly made me start running (you said it wasn't scary, it is)

I ran to the entrance door of my flat building and opened the door with the fob and started running up the stairs. When they said zombies 50 meters away all sorts of weird images were going through my head and i stumbled (but never dropped my phone) i stubbed my finger, the finger tip that had had a stanley blade through it a few weeks earlier for which i ended up in A and E over, and then i raced to turn my phone off.

    Genuinely scared.

It took a good 10 minutes for me to get my breathing under control when i got in.

I am very embarrassed with myself and feel unfit.

Going to try another 1km tomo and see if i can beat 5 minutes and then walk back i think.

    I need some support :D
  • But you DID IT! You got out there and you DID IT! End of! I am a really slow runner and I used to be so self-conscious about it, thinking that people would be laughing at me as I just edged past them at their walking pace but I dont care anymore, because with each week that passes of me DOING IT, I feel myself getting fitter.

I have good and bad days. On the bad days it really hurts and on the good days it just hurts! But my Apple Watch tells me that six months ago, my average heart rate during a run was 180bpmish. Tonights 5K race was 152bpm! THAT is progress. Oh and the fact that I couldnt run a mile without stopping in January. I dont care too much about speed anymore, I go for distance.

I put myself back a few weeks ago by pushing my limits too much - getting over-excited with my progress and being a little too ambitious with my distances, so have had to go back to 2 mile runs for a bit and turning the zombie chases off while I recover.

Oh and being scared! Well, you did make me chuckle a bit! LOL. Motivated you to move though eh? :-) I physically jumped during my mission tonight - it is quite scary until you get caught a couple of times and remember that it is just entertainment! LOL
