I have a spare set of 16" alloys from my Volvo V50 fit 205/55 r16 tyres. They are a bit scruffy but perfectly useable , based in SW Scotland I would consider selling.
These would fit a Focus0 -

If you go for winter tyres on smaller rims, then check out the rims will physically fit over your brakes - not just diameter but depth too. Also be aware that if your car has tyre pressure monitoring you may need TPMS transmitters too - average about £30/corner but may be a lot more.
Best prices I've found for tyres is www.tyreleader.co.uk (based in Germany, but 2-day shipping to UK). [No connection except as a satisfied repeat customer.]
Thanks for the above advice - yes the other option is to stay on current rims and switch to all season tyres. I do have tyre pressure monitoring in place so maybe best i dont downsize at present.0 -

If i stick to my 215/50 R17 rims - can anyone find me any other cheaper fitted options for me other than below? I think i would prefer the better known brands such as the Michelin crossclimate....
Star Performer SPTS AS £68 a tyre
Hankook Kinergy 4S H740 £100 a tyre
Maxxis MA-AS £105 a tyre
Falken Euro All Season AS200 £105 a tyre
Michelin Crossclimate are about £130 / tyre
Goodyears about £150 /tyre
Thanks again0 -
M+S markings just say that there are grooves clear across the tyre's tread, and that there's a certain ratio of groove to block. That's it. Proper winter and all-season tyres use different rubber compounds to summer tyres, which are increasingly specialist to reduce rolling resistance.
That's absolutely correct - M+S tyres are inferior to a 'true' winter tyre.
But they are accepted as a Winter fitment in countries which have those rules and regs that require Winter tyres to be fitted, as opposed to Summer tyres.
It might help if people though of Summer tyres and Winter tyres rather than thinking that Summer tyres were 'normal'.0 -
The Michelin site quoted seems rubbish - have just tested the details of my old Focus MK2 55 reg and the current Merc C Class and for both it came back with incorrect info. Just be aware.0

No, they aren't.
I checked before a trip to Germany and all-season tyres with an M+S mark were OK in winter. I can't find the source at the mo but a quick Google produced this link that would seem to confirm...

M+S seems to be OK in several other countries too.0 -
The only thing a winter tyre or all season tyre needs to display is the snowflake inside the mountain for it to fulfill the legalities for those countries were having tyres for winter.
At least is what I have read on various tyre manufacturer websites, including Nokian.
I will almost certainly be buying the Nokian Weatherproof for the Berlingo.
According to the reviews the Weatherproof is a winter tyre that also operates well in summer.
The new Michelin Cross Climate is apparently a Summer tyres that also operates effectively in the Winter.
I think they are both snowflake/mountain M+S0
