you could try priceline, but you'll end up with any hotel in that area... high priced hotels, like sofitels or hiltons will be expensive, as they are expensive hotels... have you actually thought about how long you're going to be in the hotel, and whether you actually need all the services they offer,

from my last trip to NYC, we probably spent no more than an hour to two in the hotel during the day, (showering, getting changed, dropping off shopping), so really don't need (and never have needed) and expensive full service hotel... you can get some good bargains, and basic hotels, which is normally more than enough for a city break!

I Would Like To Stay Central To The Attractions But The Rooms Seem Very Expensive £150 - £200 Per Night.
Am I Better To Stay Just Outside And Maybe Travel In Via Train/car/taxi ?

There is a dedicated NYC Hotels thread, there might be information in that..

with regards to the prices... the cheapest you'll get a reasonable hotel in NYC is £100 a night.... try looking at the Hotel Cosmopolitan, as they do rooms that will have 2 double beds and a sofa bed... (i think!), but you will be looking around the £120 - £150 mark for that... !!!

btw.. anything in Manhattan can really be classes as central to the attractions, the public transport system is easy to use, and works really well!!!

Dean I can recommend the Novotel Times Square. We stayed there last year with an 11 & 14 year old. The rooms have 2 double beds in them. We found it really convenient.

Having been once though, it wouldn't bother me if we stayed further out because the metro is really a doddle to use.

At the time of booking the hotel the cheapest rate I got was through airline-network.co.uk - booked 7 months in advance and paid £160 per night.

We stayed in NJ -Radisson carteret-about £50 a night on hotels.com -brill room with two seperate rooms. Bus to Ny takes 25 mins and costs $9.80 return for adults -14 yr old is an adult and 10 yr old is50% and free at the weekend. fantastic standard of hotel -cut costs a lot as loads of cheap places to eat and a microwave in the room. (kids always feel hungry at the wrong times)

The bus goes straight into the bus station so you can walk most places from there -basically times sq by one street. For us it as a super choice as it relieved the built upness of Ny and there was a mall the hotel shuttle took you to called garden city -outlet-was so cheap! Gap vest £1.45. and lots more. Great to cut costs. V good if flying to EWR as mins away and a free shuttle.

$9.80 to get into Manhattan and back.
I'd do that journey at least 3 times in a day sometimes...
Hotel - Shopping - Hotel - Sightseeting - Hotel - Evening Meal and going out!

so my $100 hotel room works out at now, $130 and i've lost nearly 90 minutes of my life... !
*thinks* actually, i'd waste more than 90 mins, because port authority is nowhere near anything i want to visit in NYC.... :p

But markymoo you need to open your mind a bit , you are a single man I think , with a family of children as we have we just would not do that. I did say it was right for us and the point is if you read the reviews on this hotel it is right for some other people too , the point is for people to have choices.

Not everyone will have or want to have the holiday you have. We went for 10 days and we have small children so you cant go out early come back go out again etc -they can only take so much.

Try not to shoot everyone down who doesn't think like you. The info was given for a person with a family who asked for options to stay o/s of NY.

Go and price for a family of 5 in Ny in a hotel with two rooms-suite -with a fridge and microwave and you would see that £48 a day plus 2 adults at £5 a day is a pretty brill deal for us and those like us.

I have appreciated reading your info before my trip but your choice of hotel was definately not right for us.

Is your hotel not £100 a night for a room for 2?

I just thought i would also add for someone like us with smaller children. If you come into EWr this hotel is really close and the shuttle acts a bit like your own personal driver -just ask to go where you want. We found with small children places like century 21 were a nightmare so we went to out of town malls. We also found , like the London subways that with small kids it can be difficult, especially as there was some work in some of them and space was tight. We used the bus in Ny more so slower but less crowded but then we had plenty time so there was no rush to cram it all in.
