I'm going with my family on 14th dec and can not wait. We have booked a greeter so hope they will give us some good tips. I like richteabiscuits idea of taking a water taxi and just wondered if this was the best view of brooklyn bridge. Also should I pre book tickets for the top of the rock at this time of year and if so where ?
Any recommendations on what to do / or where to take teenage age boys (16), as I'm sure they will get fed up with shopping. We are only there for 5 days so need to do as much as possible. Oh and whats the weather normally like at this time of year ?
any suggestions / advice will be apprecaited
    thanks

The weather will be brass monkeys! Be prepared - could have blizzards and all sorts!

On a more personal note, when I'm in NYC with family, we go to cinema & in Manhattan if you see a newly-opened film, you often get freebies! My son & nephew got free tickets to other films and t-shirts and toys when we saw Superman and they were very chuffed indeed!

Eating in NY is a very personal thing depending on what your preference in food is.
We wanted to experience NYestablishments that were a little different to our own so I can highly recommend Chez Josephine, owned and run by Claude Baker, Josephine Baker's son. She was a famous entertainer of the 30's and lived in France for quite a bit of her life, so this place is a bit of a memorial to her but the place is really interesting the food and staff were great and they had a piano player who was also very good. (414 West 42nd Street). Another good place is Maria Pia( 319 West 51 Street, good Italian food) for a bit of a laugh we went to Lips( 4 Bank Street) if you have ever been to Funny Girls in Blackpool you will understand what this place is about. It's run by men dressed as famous women, Dolly Parton, Madonna etc and they do a floor show. The food was really good but the atmosphere in the place was brilliant we had such a good laugh. I appreciate these places won't appeal to all but suggest you 'google' them for more info.

Just booked our trip to NYC, 5th - 10th December.

Booked flights through American Airlines £516 return for the 2 of us....Bargain!

Booked to stay at the Affinia 50, went through quidco for 10% cashback and booked through Hotelopia (10% discount code on hotukdeals), so all in all out £1500 hotel bill comes in at £1215.
Saving us a couple of quid for extra

    Hi Loveabargain

Just had to comment, I am as I type in NYC - at the moment it is in the 60s/70s - teeshirts all round. I wouldn't normally be checking the MSE forums whilst on holiday but there is something else on the sticky i wanted to check out and i just spotted the question that you asked.

I was also over here 3 years ago on the 14th December which is when you are going to be here - and had the coldest few days of my life - it was absolutley freezing - it was minus 8 degrees c but with the wind chill it went down to minus 32 - yes, minus 32. Please check the weather conditions before you set off - the wind howls down the avenues and I could not feel my ears by the time i walked out of the hotel and got to the sidewalk. Plus the snow chilled me from the feet up...Seriously, esp with kids, make sure you check the temps out. With any luck, the weather being so good as it is now you could get lucky - we certainly have and i am having to go and buy new tshirts today as all the clothes i bought with me are too heavy for the weather.

I wish you good weather when you get here, even in the cold and snow it is gorgeous - if you want to see Brooklyn Bridge without freezing your bits off on a water taxi, then go down to the South St Port area - there is a little shopping plaza and a pub/cafe/food place where you can look out over the river and see the Brooklyn Bridge - and with a decent zoom you can get good images of the bridge.

For 16 year old boys in dEcember, got to be the ice skating at central park - make sure they both have cameras of some sort if they are vaugely artistic as you'll want to capture everything. You could take them to a decent show - there's always loads to do at Christmas outside of the shopping. Get them on google to come up with their own ideas...

Have fun when you get here - we are off to Greenwich Village now as the OH wants to watch some Football Match or other [England game i think] - so i am off shopping - yeah!!! The Red Lion @151 Bleeker Street for UK sport if anyone wants to know shows all sorts of games - see the website here:

    Hi Zazen999

Thanks for taken time out on your trip to give me some info.
We went to Lapland and the temp went down to -38  , thankfully we are skiers so have plenty of warm gear, but I really hope the weather is kind to us.

    Have to good trip

if you look at the max / min temps for nov/dec you will get an idea of how varied the weather can be .
could be shirtsleeves or down quilted jackets (sometimes on consecutive days)
