So, it is time for my mini travel guide. Enjoy
Chapter 1 - Getting to Manhattan
be careful out there!
New York is a fun place, and I hope this guide makes it easier for you to get around the cheapest, and the best way for you. If anyone has any queries, just post them in the main thread and i'd be more than happy to help. I'm back out in New York in September for a week, and when I come back, i'll give you guys some great restaurants to eat at, and I might even come up with some hints for men shopping with their OH, when all you want is a beer!!!

You could take a yellow water taxi from South Street Seaport around to the Soho/Greenwich pier, this would offer views of Brooklyn Bridge, Liberty & Ellis islands and Southern Manhattan. Wander into Soho for a spot of Lunch then pick up a Gray Line sightseeing double decker for a quick jaunt up Broadway to Times Square then onto Central Park, call into the Boathouse for a cocktail and come back through the park on a bike taxi. Get a cab and head for the Rockefeller, fingers crossed the queues should be minimal now. From here it's walking distance to St Patricks Cathedral, Central Station, Chrysler Building...
I'm going with my family on 14th dec and can not wait. We have booked a greeter so hope they will give us some good tips. I like richteabiscuits idea of taking a water taxi and just wondered if this was the best view of brooklyn bridge. Also should I pre book tickets for the top of the rock at this time of year and if so where ?
Any recommendations on what to do / or where to take teenage age boys (16), as I'm sure they will get fed up with shopping. We are only there for 5 days so need to do as much as possible. Oh and whats the weather normally like at this time of year ?
any suggestions / advice will be apprecaited
thanks0 -

Hello markymoo and everyone,
I've booked (!). I eventually booked through Hotwire and was allocated the Hudson. I know that there has been some varying reports but this was my family name- so it feels good to me-and we won't be in the hotel very much.
I was wondering if you or anyone else could advise on how to arrange the following itinerary; We arrive JFK 13th November at 13.45 and depart JFK on 18th November at 19.45.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Central Park
TOTR
Chrysler Building
Grand Central Station
Staten island ferry
Ellis Island
Stock Market area
Brooklyn Bridge
Financial Area
Chinatown
Oh and perhaps find time to do a little shopping and fit in a Broadway show.
Also find great food in each area for each day, lunch & dinner.
I realise this is asking a lot but all ideas would be gratefully received. feel free to change or add ideas if you feel I've missed something.
Thank you for reading.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Central Park
you could combine these top two by walking through central park to the museum ....art museums can take how ever many hours/days you want them to take ...i'm not a real art lover so i'm the wrong person for that one.
central park should have the ice rink on at that time of year (i think) ..strawberry fields/dakota buildings...also you'll hopefully catch the end of the fall which will make the park pretty.
from central park walk down 5th ave
pass
fao schwarz toy shop
trump tower
pass close to the museum of modern art
arrive at st patricks cathedral which is across from the rockefeller centre which you will be going to for top of the rock
you can also visit radio city hall next door
TOTR
another segment would be
Chrysler Building
Grand Central Station
which are really only photo opportunities
GCT make sure you go in and admire the architecture and murals (also not a bad food court in basement)
come out of GCT onto E42nd st and you'll see the chrysler building ...there's not really anything to do as a tourist other than admire and photo ie you can't go up it !
carry on along this street and at the end (reasonable walk) is the UN building
i would combine this all in a walk and include the empire state building and macys (if you are only going once to NY i feel you have to go up the empire state building)
this bottom block could be done in a day(ish)
Staten island ferry
Ellis Island (if you don't visit the statue of liberty it saves loads of time)
Stock Market area
Brooklyn Bridge
Financial Area
Chinatown
get the subway over to brooklyn ...walk back over
visit south street seaport
walk down fulton street to
the world trade centre site (century 21's store is here that everyone else raves about )
go down broadway and you are in the heart of the financial district
NYSE and wall street
from here it is walkable to south ferry for the staten island ferry and battery park for ellis island
i'd round off the day by getting a taxi (or public transport) probably up to chinatown for a look round and somewhere to eat (sorry i don't know any names of restaurants)
i'd better add that we love walking round NYC so some might think the distances a bit far but there's plenty to see and plenty of places to stop on route
hope you have a great time and read all the other tips as mine are just mere ramblings ( a good guidebook is a must )0
