  • I'm off to NY in a few weeks and I'm planning the finer points of our itinerary.

How much time should we allow to safely get to JFK for our return flight? Flight departs at 22:30 and we're staying on W 44th. We hope to do on-line check in the night before in order to maximise our time in the big apple.

    Tnks

hmm.. i'm one of these, that you want to be there 3 hours before your flight, and then you need at least an hour to get from midtown to JFK (took me an hour once to LGA, and that is nearer!)

also, if you're checking in online, you need to print your boarding passes, so you need to be sure you have access to a printer!!
  • Thanks Markymoo! I am one of those type of people too but I will be forcing myself not to be on this occasion. The hotel we are staying at has free internet access and computer & printer for guests use so we are hoping we can def do on-line check in and cut down on the time we wait at the airport. Our time is very limited in NY so want to make the most of every minute.

if you're already checked in, and printed your boarding passes, all you'll have to do is go thru security, after checking your luggage, so you probably only need to be at the airport 90 mins before at the latest...

International flights start boarding 45 mins before departure..

    Hi,

Just after some advice about what is possible in NY in 23 hours.

We land at 10:55pm and fly out again at 10:10pm the following night so won't even get 23 hours once got through customs and check in for flight 2 (or 3) hours before flight.

Not interested in Shopping, would like to get out on the water at some point. What would you recomend?... where would be best to stay.... Airport or downtown hotel? Also does anybody know if you can leave luggage in JFK to stop us having to carry it all around?

    Cheers

if you want a quick trip on the water, think about the Staten Island Ferry.. it goes straight past the Statue of Liberty, so you can get some good photographs, and it doesn't cost a penny (or should that be 2¢ ? )

what other things do you want to do? personally, you could get a hotel near the airport, and then travel into manhattan first thing in the morning...
  • Skip the queues at the Empire State building and head for the Rockefeller Center instead, we went mid afternoon around 2pm and walked straight in. Personally I think the view from the Rock' is much better than the Empire, the sight of Central Park is stunning.

You could take a yellow water taxi from South Street Seaport around to the Soho/Greenwich pier, this would offer views of Brooklyn Bridge, Liberty & Ellis islands and Southern Manhattan. Wander into Soho for a spot of Lunch then pick up a Gray Line sightseeing double decker for a quick jaunt up Broadway to Times Square then onto Central Park, call into the Boathouse for a cocktail and come back through the park on a bike taxi. Get a cab and head for the Rockefeller, fingers crossed the queues should be minimal now. From here it's walking distance to St Patricks Cathedral, Central Station, Chrysler Building...

I totally agree about going up the rockerfella centre, or top of the rock as its actually known, the one main difference between this and empire state, apart from the q's, is that from top of the rock you can see the empire state when you look over the skyline and if your standing on esb you wont see it, hope that makes sense.

    have a great time
