yeah.. this belongs in the NYC Any questions thread we have going..

car parking costs around $20 an hour.... a taxi in that instance would be cheaper..
however, read my getting around NYC guide... print it off and take it with you... the subway in NYC is the CHEAPEST way to travel, and it is 24 hours..

as for getting into NYC, from JFK it is $45 in a taxi... and that is the easiest way... maybe try someone like carmelcarservice, or telaviv for a bigger car for all of you..

any more questions, post them in the NYC thread and i'll be more than willing to help..

P.S - if you ask for directions to the metro, you'll get sent through to the metronorth railroad, it is a subway in NYC..

OMEGA - We ate at the rest at the top of the marriot hotel in times square - it revolves with 360o windows and is amazing. The food was 'fancy' and quite good but you could not beat that view at nighttime with the whole of new york lit up! Amazing. Expect to pay £100 for 2 with wine thou.

sally saver, I noticed you said that from JFK it's possible to take the air train and then subway into NY for around $7, I was sure someone on here posted that you are not allowed to take luggage on the subway or am I imagining it?

I've had luggage on the subway before.

However it may be that the rule you mention comes into effect at rush hour when it's crammed full of people. When i travelled it wasn't that busy - relativelty speaking of course!!

Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!
  • Hi,
You are not imagining the luggage story but I'm almost sure it said it was sort of not 'encouraged' but I can assure you we had no problem either going into or out of New York. I can see luggage would be a problem on some of the trains I was on, tinned sardines springs to mind! We travelled to JFK just before lunchtime on a Sunday morning and it was relatively quiet (we had a seat all the way) and there were lots of people with their trolly cases. Like I said before, if you are reasonably fit and can manage stairs you should be able to manage. The metro system is old and appears to be having a makeover so in the future, lifts and escalators may well be planned. If the poster who took the 'minivan'(don't be put off by the description) paid $72, for me thats the way to go. Its about 45/60 minutes by road depending on the traffic and at least you will get to see where you are going and more importantly dropped off at the hotel door. Please be guided by the Travel Info Bureau or an official Taxi Despatcher. Don't get into anything that is not licensed.Try and remember the terminal number you fly into, in order to assist you on your return if you do happen to do metro/airtrain. There are 9 terminals and the airtrain stops at every one of them. I don't know how long you are going for, but another tip is to 'travel light' in order to leave room for 'treats'
I thought the place was amazing. Its definitely the city that never sleeps! Hope this helps- sally

RoxieW (or anyone else with advice)

Would you recommend the Marriot View restaurant for a wedding meal? We are travelling to NYC in July to get married in Central Park and looking for a restaurant that will seat 12 people, but as folk are travelling a long way, it needs to have a bit of WOW factor. I have read that the views are great, but other forums have said the food is not so good. Anyone have an opinion on this? Is the food good/atmosphere good enough for a special meal?

The restaurant that seems to be recommended most by New Yorkers for a romantic meal is The River Cafe under the Brooklyn Bridge - apparently the food is special, and the views are fantastic as it's overlooking all of Manhattan. Unfortunately they can't seat 12 of us.

    Thanks in advance.

tripadvisor will be good to check out restaurants, and also https://www.menupages.com as that has information about the menus and other reviews too...

there are plenty of great restaurants, so i'm sure you won't have a problem

Hi Fitzio - I would recommend The View for a special meal. The food wasn't amazing, to be honest - thou it was quite 'fancy' and nice. It wasn't horrible or anything, but not the best I've had. However, the view was simply fantastic. I'd check when booking that they can accomodate your party for a table right by the window as others have mentioned not getting a great view and when we went there were a few tables that were a bit further out. Our table was right by the window and the view simply fantastic. Plus its very wow to be in a 'revolving' restaurant, right in the heart of times square. The service was fantastic too.
If you haven't already, check out the website. There are menus on there. The menus are comparable to UK prices at an upmarket restaurant.
    Happy Wedding planning!

    Thanks Markymoo and RoxieW!

I think we will go ahead and book The View. Need to call them first though as I can't find any e-mail contact. I have read loads of reviews and posts on TripAdvisor forums, and most did seem to suggest that the food wasn't brilliant, but you can't have everything! As long as it's good, I am sure the view will make up for it. I did read good things about The Boathouse too, but I suppose I just think that the view would make it more memorable for being in New York. Thanks again for your advice.
