but that isn't how the system works in the States.....when in Rome etc.

and if you dont agree with the system?

anyway as long as our american cousins can come to the uk and claim their tax back on their shopping and yet we dont get the same service when we go to the states then Im gona keep moneysaving by being tight.

dont go ? ...or be upfront and explain before your meal that you have no intention of leaving a tip as you don't agree with the system.
if you wish to reduce the tax you pay in the States select a good state to shop in ...although paying 8% in NY state isn't that bad if you are buying Ralph Lauren T-shirts at under £5 a go

    Hi

Does anyone know the best way of geeting from JFK to PHL airport or to Atlantic City Airport.

There are three of 3 and a flight from one of these airport is much cheaper but I cant see how to get an airport transfer. I looked at one way car hire but thats coming in at over $200 for 6 hours.

if you haven't already booked your flights to the US you may be better off flying into Newark as you can get the train to Philly and onwards to Atlantic City if required

i've been busy for the past week, so i'll cram what people have been asking (and not replied to) in a single, but fairly lengthy post..

Phat Bear - you said - I would realise how important it is to get a new job, hell they could work in Mc D's and earn more money.

actually.. with tips, and the basic wage, i'm sure people working in restaurants, bars etc, will earn more than working in a fast food restaurant.. IF you do go to New York, may i suggest you only decide to eat at McD's. What will they do? yes.. they'll complain if you don't tip, and if you were ever to return again, they will remember you!!!

    JohnXS - you asked

1.when is best time to book

My Rule, which is not set in stone, is around 3 months.... start looking 6 months before, and if you see something that is a bargain, grab it.. but 3 months you should still be ok.

    2.who should he book with

i'll go with the money saving idea, and say the cheapest company that is reputable. if it is too good to be true????

    3.which hotels do people rate.

I rate the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca. about a 15 - 20 min subway ride to midtown, but it is a great location to explore more of the real new york, rather than the tourist traps.

4.how much she he be looking at paying.

    £200 - £275 for a flight is acceptable
£100 a night in a hotel is reasonable too.. depends what quality he wants.

5.what places should they be considering visiting

Search this thread, its been discussed plenty of times...

6.i know she will be looking to do some xmas shopping so would this affect time of travel/choice of hotel

November is a busy time of year.. it always is!!!

7.he is not the one who normally organises hols so would he be better going through travel agent and if so who do you recommend

No... its more expensive, and you get nothing more for your money... if he knows how to use the web, and doesn't mind spending a bit of time at it.. book a flight, book a hotel, and organise it that way... if he ain't done it before, its good fun, and he probably won't go back to the travel agents again!!!

Belfastbelle - Sim cards.. I recommend a US T-Mobile sim card.. reasonably cheap to run for US - US calls, and US - UK text messages.. gets pricy if you're calling home, but it is better than using a UK mobile, as you know exactly what to spend..

the 3 phone is probably useless out there, as it is locked to three... however the O2 phone should be unlocked all networks, so just slip in the sim card...

Joepubli - Internal Flight, if you can get one from JFK to PHL is probably the easiest... even though its only an hour on the plane, a plane journey like this in the states, is like a train journey for us... car hire will be expensive, and it can be scary driving on the roads out there... i know.. i've done it myself...
