My son, recently out of university, is taking his girlfriend to New York on Boxing Day and wants to do the 'impression' bit by taking her out one special evening for a 'dinner and dance' with the whole 'Tuxedo and party frock' bit. He has looked at the Rainbow Room but has been put off not just by (well in truth yes he has !!) the very high prices but more by reports of the 'not so good' food bit. So he has come back to dad for advice (as they do !)!.

Can anyone help me/him on his quest please ? A romantic evening, dressed to 'the nines' with good food, good atmosphere and preferably not going to have to mortgage himself in his ambition ?

    Many thanks in advance

Can anyone give me an idea as to how much to budget for eating out each day in New York.

Looking to eat in delibars or similar, not necessarily fine dining.

Any general recommendations welcome. Will be there for Christmas Day, so any suggestions for eating then also welcome. Well, unfortunately I won't be in New York, but my friend will.

    Thanks in advance

I have been to NY a few times and the most romantic (and best!) place I have eaten has to be The Boathouse in Central Park, it was amazing! Not quite the "dinner & dance" that you mention but totally unique experience!

Little Italy is full of lots of nice little restaurants where you can get a lovely meal for a couple of $'s, eating at lunch time is always cheaper too!

China town is also good for a cheap meal!

if you're relying on deli's... breakfast will cost you $5 at the most..
that will include, bagel with cream cheese, coffee, and also a sausage / bacon & egg roll..... cheap innit..

then it comes to the other stuff.. most deli's have hot and cold salads and you grab a tub and fill it... they weigh it, and voila, lunch... with a drink for a very reasonable $15

personally, the evening, i'd find a pub / bar and get pub food... drink included, you can still feast for $20

so, thats $40 a day for food.. at the very most.. budget a couple of bucks extra for drinks... and don't be afraid to haggle with that streetside cart seller trying to charge you $2 for a bottle of water, when others sell the same drink for $1... i did.. and it works.. :p

    flight update

ok.. as you're aware, i'm going to NYC in march.. now.. less than 2 weeks ago, the cheapest flight i could get was £320 ish, and £360 for a direct flight from manchester..

today, i can get cheap from £230, and direct from £255....it reassures me that my 3 month rule to start looking works..

and both prices are a *** price according to my signature guide...

hi i plan to go new york on the fiest week of january,

dont really wish to spend a minute longer in the hotel as its the first tiem im going and plan to make the most of it.

my mum is goign and she will love the tours rather than just walkabout not knowing where to go.

    any good tours..please help..
  • We did this and really enjoyed it. They showed clips of the films on the bus so it didn't matter if you hadn't seen them - there were about four stops off the bus in a three hour tour.

We also did this, which was good but nothing special when you have lived in parts of the UK with fab delis. The tour guide we had was fab and told us lots about food though, and tit bits about the area we were walking through, and the food was delish but mostly nothing that you wouldn't get in the UK. We wish we had done this earlier in the week as he recommended some gorgeous looking restaurants.

  • Hi,
I hope one of you who is going on this trip is a very confident, experienced driver if it is your intention to hire a vehicle! Having just returned from there, I can tell you the traffic is unbelivable. Its a big one way system.
Taxis are inexpensive for a start. But the public transport system is remarkable. You can get a $24 (£12) subway ticket which will last you all week, take as many subway/bus rides as you like. Whilst the metro system may take some working out in the beginning, it is really clever, but there can be lots of stairs and not many excalators. Look at the NYC thread on this board and you will see some really brilliant contributions from posters particularly Markymoo. Alternatively go onto the New York Forum on www.tripadvisor.co.uk and there is loads more information given there. I hope you enjoy New York half as much as I did but beware, its bitterly cold and was snowing last week. Check out Hertz and Avis for car hire. Regards - sally
