pubs, bars, shops, subway trains, taxi's, hotel rooms, are all air conditioned.. and when outside, you walk with a bottle of water, in your hand at all times, and walk slowly...
you'll blend in and be a local if you follow them rules!

We were there end of July last year. spent three evenings at the cinema because it was all we were fit for by the end of the day.
Seriously, change your birthday. Or your intended destination. Unless you LIKE hot and humid.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Its official as of today that I'm going (for the first time) to NYC for my 30th!!!
Now its not until December but I'm allowed to be excited, and also want to make it perfect so getting very organised!
There will therefore be more posts over the coming months but here's my opener:
Flight plan is Virgin PE as its my bday so want a bit more style! (using the miles + money deal - currently around £460 each - but dont know when is best to book, given the credit crunch and hoping prices will fall but if more airlines go bust so there's less competition...
Was going to mention that I'm the birthday girl at check-in/on booking - anyone know of any extra treats from Mr B's team?
And when is best time to book?
Now hotel wise it HAS TO BE Central Park (as bizarre but want to go for a jog in Central Park on bday morning - then make up the "lost calories" at the Magnolia bakery but I digress...)
Quick hunt about on hotelconxions came up with Astor on the Park, Central Park West, 3* and seems to tick all our boxes for $551 for the 3 nights (Fri, Sat, Sun) - I thought it was too early to book but am tempted to snap this up pronto? Is it likely I could get a better deal nearer the time or by ringing the hotel directly (i.e. early bird discount?). Also anyone know about this particular hotel or any overlooking the park?
BTW Dates are Out Friday 4th Dec Back Monday 7th (my bday)0 -
Hi all just looking for some advice with regard to using travellers cheques. My son looks very different in his pasport pics and i wondered whether you thought this may cause him trouble when atempting to use them in shops?Merry Christmas MSE!0

travellers cheques? what are they?
sorry.. but personally, i don't bother with them.. cash is king.. especially in NYC..
now, i've used TC's on a couple of occasions, many years ago, and i don't think i ever got asked for ID when spending them..
however, now i just take cash, and stash it somewhere, and spend it at will... much more convenient..
most corner shops, delis, taxis won't take TC's, and trying to spend them sometimes is a pain... big stores, yes, some restaurants yes, but cash... cash.. (or if old enough a nationwide current account)

Hi,
I wouldnt worry about mentioning it at check-in, there isnt an awful lot that they can do. I would instead mention it to the crew onboard. Tell them how excited you have been, the occasion, and how long you have planned it. I would guess that you will recieve a nice tall glass of bubbly and some chocolates, maybe even a rendition of 'Happy Birthday to you...' from the crew.....or a PA. It all depends on circumstances/resources on the day!
Crew know NYC like the back of their hand (even if we have just been moved from Manhatten for most of our flights:mad: ). I've been trying to work out how many times I have been and stopped at the 200 mark!!!!!!, so dont be afraid to ask questions. We are a savvy little bunch of true MSE's!0 -

We had a varied response using TCs in cafes etc: some quite small places would take them but not everywhere. I'd recommend more smaller 'denominations' over a few 'larger' ones, because, for example, the Post Office couldn't let us buy a few stamps with a TC and get the change, because we weren't spending a large enough percentage of the value of the TC (I hope you can follow that).
I THINK the only place we were asked for ID on using TCs was in a bank, which we only did once. You would hope that in a bank they would have someone experienced at comparing passport photos to real faces to make this OK.
I'd consider sending as much cash as possible / reasonable within the bounds of what your son feels comfortable with and what the school is suggesting, with maybe an 'emergency' fund in TCs. If that makes sense.
(On a side note, I wondered if US immigration would let DS3 in, because the sweet innocent child in his passport photo had been transformed into a long-haired 'youff' who towered over the chap on the desk. He did say "Wow!" but there was no problem.)Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Can anyone tell me if children are allowed in New York bars. We are going in April for a week and have heard it is strictly over 21. Presumably they can get in all restaurants and we can have a drink there?
Also can anyone recommend their favourite restaurants, delis etc that are really good and reasonably priced or is there a thread for this?0 -
Right... my plan for my 11th trip to NYC is do a proper photography holiday. I have a proper SLR camera, so can take some really good photos, but I'm wondering if there is anything organised especially for us photography geeks?
if not, i'll just do what i did last time, and wander around aimlessly...

Hi markymoo (and all),
This is my first NYC post. I've just finished scanning over this thread and I'm booked for NYC at the beginning of April for 5 nights. Can't wait!
I spotted your photography post and wondered if you had done any more research on this? I'll be taking my digital SLR. I'll be snapping the sights as we travel around but I was wondering if anyone knows of any good tips on where to get good/unique angles of the main sights etc, rather than the standard tourist shots?
Cheers.0
