Some time ago there was a thread about being able to get a personal message put up on the Toys r us board in Times Square, New York. I have searched the forum but cannot find it, and I would love to know the details - ie is it definitely Toys r us, and do you just go in and ask?

    Thanks in advance.
    Watch this space...
  • By the way, loving this thread. Have visited NYC approx 200 times since 1990. Really love the place (though Chicago is Verrrrrrry close).
Work as air crew for Virgin Atlantic, so happy to answer queries where I can!

Actually I have a query completely un-New York related but you might be able to answer - I'm a trainee Paramedic and the other half is a qualified Paramedic. A friend mentioned recently that if we inform the airline we're flying with that we're happy to assist in an emergency if there's no doctor on board then we would most likely get a free upgrade on the flight. Have you ever heard of this happening? If it's true then I'll definitely be trying it - after all, gotta love a freebie!

    Hi everyone...again!:o
We've just been reading about putting a personal message in lights on Hersey's notice board outside the shop as a surprise for our son's 18th. It costs $5 and will stay for 15 mins. Has anyone done this before? We've tried to find how to book, but nothing seems to be on the site about it. Tips please...

Only 6 days to go....:j :j AND on the Sunday SNOW is forecast for a while - so happy, just can't wait!!:T :D
(makes up for the dreadful dollar exchange rate...)
We did this last week. There is a counter where they take your message, then you pay at the main checkout with everyone else. Ask any of the staff and they'll be able to help you. Our message went straight up - it scrolls twice, then adverts, then repeats. We didn't hang around for more than 2 or 3 cycles as we had it on video by then, so don't know if it was up for longer than 15 minutes. The cost is $4.99 plus sales tax, so $5.36 in total.

Have a look across the road though and further down to the right as you leave Hersheys. There's a huge electronic billboard that says you can put your picture up on it (it was mostly yellow/red with a picture of a family on it). We only spotted this in the taxi on the way home so not sure what store this is, how much it costs or how you book it. If your considering it, it might be a good idea to have your photo in as many formats as you can (e.g. hard copy, usb stick, memory card).

If you do find this, please let us know how it works!

    Also, this link.

    Hello Madmalteaser,
    Sadly this is not true!
However there is a small element of truth. If a medical emergency were to occur and we asked for a medically qualified volunteer, and you came forward and assisted then yes, the Flight Manager would do all they can to upgrade you. However sometimes flights have no spare seats:o ..........
So in short, you have to wait for that PA!
  • I raided this site for info for my trip so hopefully this may help someone,
Hotel - We stayed at The Pod, thanks to Marky M for the recomendation :T . Pretty basic but a great price and top location 6 blocks from central park and 12 blocks from Times Square. One complaint, no hot water of the last morning but for travelers on a budget, as we were, perfect.

Transfers - We flew into Newark and got the Liberty express bus, 40 minutes into manhatten, one hour out. $25 return and the bus stop is right outside the airport, they drop you at 3 places in Manhatten, one is Grand Central which is perfect for staying at the Pod, highly recomend this service. Get your tickets in advance here
    http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp

Bus Tours - Had read loads of bad reviews bud did this anyway, $44 gets you a 48 hour hop on hop off ticket (Grey Line). We did all three loops (Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn) in three days and hopped on and off loads. A great way to get about and see the sights, the guides are great too, although they do pressure for tips, we were going to tip anyway but I don't apprecieate being hassled into it. Well worth while if it's your first visit.

Sights - Dont bother going to the statue of liberty, get the Statten Isalnd Ferry, it's free and fast and goes right by it. Empire state building was worth doing just so we can say weve been there but it's $20 and after half an hour we'd had enough. Ground Zero was very odd, not very eerie at all, I imagine if it was a big empty space it woul be very moving but it's a building site and watching builders eating their packed lunches kind of takes the edge off it. It is still amazing to see how big those towers must have been and what a difference it has made to the skyline.

Night time stuff - We went to the thatre to see Grease (her choice) of course it's going to be good it's New York but I'm not a theatre person so can't comment. We also went to MSG to see the Rangers vs the Hurricanes (ice hockey, my choice). Absolutely amazing, from standing for the national anthem to people throwing hot dogs it was nauseatingly American but absolutely brilliant at the same time, so glad I experienced it. We bought tickets in advance, fairly expensive, but there were loads of empty seats and apparently you can usually buy them on the day cheaper. Make sure you get a giant foam finger ($7), not to be missed.

Shopping - Incredible, and thats coming from a guy. Both Macy's and Bloomingdales give tourists 11% off, we got upgraded to 20% off in Macy's for no reason at all. Most stuff is reduced anyway and you can use your discount on top of existing discounts. I got a T-shirt in Macy's 85% off and my girlfriend got a Juicy Courture dress (very expensive in this country) for 20 bucks, yes thats about £13 (easily £90 in the UK). Century 21 was a massive let down, like a jumble sale and way more expensive than Macy's and Bloomingdales.

General Points - Very cheap, not just clothes but also food, we were paying roughly what we would pay at home in Newcastle, so when you compare that to London for example thats pretty good value. We took £300/$450 each for 3 and a half days and managed perfectly, even with an extra 4kg of clothes coming home. Also very safe, massive police presence, never felt threatened once, even the shady looking guys are sooo friendly. Apparently you still have to watch out in Harlem and China town but anywhere else is fine.

Finaly - I never go back places, I prefer to see somewhere new but I really want to go back here. In our 3.5 days we did loads and saw loads but never got a chance to stop and just soak up the city unitl the last 2 hours. Im going to go back with no plan and no pressure to sight see and all the rest and just enjoy it..........A fantastic city:T

Absolutely, I enjoyed Manhatten so much more the second time I went back and it was warm weather..the first time I went it was freezing..so this time, we walked so much more, lazed around in Central Park...and just soaked up the whole atmosphere. I just love it there. :D
