We recently flew into Newark and paid for a yellow cab to take us in to Manhattan (West 44th). Price was $57 and we had to pay for round trip tolls (for the Lincoln Tunnel) + a tip. I think I paid $80 in total !!! This was more than we paid when we flew into JFK last year.

We did a taxi from JFK as it is a set fare to Manhattan it is about $40, the return isn't but it only cost us about $2 more.
A Taxi from Newark airport to Manhattan can be quite expensive unless there are four of you (it cost us approx $80), it is so easy to get a bus from the airport (get a return ticket, approx $22 each), the bus stops at about three locations on Manhattan, can't remember the first, second is the Port Authority Bus Station, around the corner from Grand Central Station being the last stop, if your hotel is close to this location, just walk to the hotel, if not grab a cab.

If you have cash to spare or as a special treat you can get a helicopter from the roof of Newark airport that takes you to some where on the East side of Manhattan (can't remember where exactly).
If I remember it's about £200, a lot of money (no I haven't done it), so I think it would have to be a special treat, then you need a taxi to your hotel.

Our son is 18. Is he allowed to drink alcohol with a meal but not buy it?

When I travelled to New York a few years ago with a friend, I was over 21 and she wasn't. She was asked for ID when ordering an Irish Coffee and when she admitted her age was politely refused it.

We are off to NY on Saturday for 4 days. I want a hop on hop off bus ticket but I have now read so much and and so much advice that I can't find the details. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I would like to hear a Gospel choir - is Harlem too far from Times Sq or could we find somewhere closer? I am unsure about a tour for this as it seems a bit disrespectful - has anyone done this?

So far teh site has heped with Broadwaybox, and I decided on a cab from the airport and seeing the skyline from the ferry - Thanks

We didn't notice any signs about not taking liquid onto the plane on the way back, nor any bins for water bottles etc. Is is just a UK thing?
I got back two weeks ago from NY and I had to put my liquids in a bag.
We also got 1 item each from our liquids bag tested so i prosume not?
but am not sure so if anyone knows for sure who could shed some light?

  • The liquid rule DOES apply there. I got caught out with a large carton of orange juice in my hand luggage. They let me drink it though, once they had scared me by calling 2 guards over and escorting me to a special side room!

I think the subway is the best way to get into town - you don't have to deal with New York traffic, and the subway is easy. But be aware that most stations don't have lifts or escalators.

Despite that, I've managed it on my own several times, with a LOT of luggage, as I was out there for months at a time. It never took long before some cute guy would carry my bag up the stairs for me. :) That NEVER happens in England!

Just back - Don't worry about getting tickets for the hop on hop off buses just walk around Times Square and there will be people all over selling tickets.

Have been twice and seen the Harlem Gospel choir twice and they are fab. They play on a Sunday at BBKings club - http://www.bbkingblues.com/brunch/index.shtml
get your tickets early (night before if you can) and turn up early to join the queue to get in...a great experience

I wouldn't mind trying to book to go to New York in February. The issue is it's during half term and most of the deals seem to be very very expensive.

Does anyone have any tips for me, or is it simply tough luck due to the school holidays?

(btw, I have no choice in this matter as my girlfriend is a teacher).

Fantastic -but just tried to book BBKings tickets, but could not figure out how to get delivery. Will it be OK to buy when in NY? Now nervous about PDF tickets!:o

I have not yet received my PDF Mamma Mia tickets from Broadwaybox they were purchased on the 2/11 -should they be here by now?
