Has anybody been from JFK on Thanksgiving Day do the taxi fares rise for the holiday?
Also do many shops and restaurants close?
  • We wanted to buy a snowglobe from Saks however it would have to go into handluggage but of course it has liquid in it which most people wouldnt think twice about but i think this would be taken off you at security as they cant get into it to test the liquid and also prob more than 100ml so just to remind anyone as we nearly bought one however remembered last minute.
If anyone thinks any different please let me know?
Gutted we couldnt buy one but could have been a waste of money if taken off us.

Thanks thatsfabulous. I had really fancied buying an NYC snowglobe when I go out there next month but hadn't even considered the issues of getting it through security. Do you think it would work if we saw one we liked, bought it, packed it well and then posted it back?

    Thanks
  • No problem, Have a look in saks if your go they had a lovely one ( the one we wanted to buy) was $30 i think.

Well if we could have we would have put it in our suitcase to check in but we had already packed and was leaving that morning, went shopping for a few last minute things and forgot about the liquids ban etc and so had made no room for it in our suitcase.

IMO I'd say if you can, your best asking for bubble wrap from the shop you buy it from, wrap it well and put it in your suitcase that you will check- in ( not hand luggage) and hopefully it will be ok as wrapped well.

Alright, I'm looking for a 4-5 night break away in New york (our first visit) with my GF in April. We are both mid 20s.

The dates are between the 4th April and 19th April. How does this look:

Flights - £295 return (from BA) leaving on 11/04 and coming back on 15/04
Hotel - about £350 each for 4 nights

Total = £645 for 4 night break away.

I'm having most trouble trying to find a good hotel at good prices, any recommended sites to search on?

Also I have the option of going at the end of May rather than April, do you think it would be better to go then? The hotel may cost more, that's the only issue.

    redrabbit29...

one thing i've noticed, just looking at your post, is that you quote the hotel as a per person thing...

no hotels in NYC are every sold on a per person basis, and always on a per room basis... if you have found a hotel, check it online, search for it, and see if you can beat the price..

hotelconxions.com is my favourite, and if you've read through this thread, the cosmopolitan hotel is my choice of hotel in NYC

markymoo - thanks for your post, I seen that conexions site link earlier in the thread, so thanks again for the recommendation, I'll look there now.

The room is actually priced on a per-room basis, I just halved it to show per person.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi

I am looking for a good quality 3.5* up hotel in New York for 6 nights 30/06/09 to 06/07/09. Would like it to be in the Times Square to Central Park area. Can anyone help please?

Best price I have so far is roughly £1150, can anyone beat that?

    Thanks

    hi all

went to new york for the 1st time on 16/10 and returned 21/10 and stayed at the edison, brill location....
had a fantastic time with my 3 girlfriends
thanx to all, esp markymoo, for all the advice on ths thread
just gonna list some of the things we did, if it helps anyone...

grayline tour bus, hopped on/off and wandered around some of the different areas, just great...

booked ferry in advance and stepped off for close up view of statue of liberty, just breathtaking...didnt get off at ellis island, sort of ran out of time....

top of the rock, turned up at tkt booth near ice rink and walked straight up and spent the most amazing couple of hours taking in the birds eye views, ab fab ($20each, credit card only)

went to ground zero but couldnt see anything as theyre rebuilding, but did spend a couple of hours at st paul's chapel, where volounteers and firefighters went to eat/sleep/have massages/first aid/counselling...very moving and emotive to spend time there reading bout events and msgs of support from around the world, also a firefighter was there signing books, he'd been involved in events that day.....so humbling

walked over brooklyn bridge, brill views, saw loads of helicopters taking off at nearby helipad on the waterside...saw a few brides too, walking over the bridge in their wedding dresses carrying poseys, 2 included traditional jewish members and minister i think following them in their party, how lovely and relaxed on such a beautiful day and setting....btw the weather was beautiful, bright blue clear skies the whole time we were there, no rain, just light jacket and jeans temperature, tho the mornings were sometimes cold

we navigated the subway easy enough tho u do need to get ur head round it a bit, just getting the hang of it as we were due home

booked tickets for broadway at southsea port, turned up at 3.45hrs and it closes at 4pm on sunday...not much choice left but we chose to see chicago that night which we really enjoyed ($66each, credit card only )

spent a fortune in sephoras (loads of these shops dotted around) between us Lol, beauty/hair stockists....wanted to treat ourselves, not hugely cheaper than uk, but did buy some benefit makeup, some l'occitane...... some for friends and family for xmas

enjoyed cocktails at the top of the marriot hotel, time square, bout $22 each (given souvenir engraved cocktail glass saying view top with each cocktail) but the view at night was spectacular...btw, if we hadn't already eaten we could have paid bout $25 for a hot/cold all u can eat buffet which looked delish....

visited grand central station, wow its absoultely beautiful, such a lovely station with a great feel to it, lovely eating areas, def worth a stop by if u can...

rubbed the bulls balls, urged to do this for financial rewards...have won a tenner on the lottery since i came back, lol

Down in the NYC's Financial District, there has long stood a statue of a bull (as in "the bull market", I presume). It's near the Stock Exchange, and as such, stockbrokers pass by it every day. I read a while back that if you look closely, you will notice that the testicles on the statue are brilliantly burnished -- from the hands of myriad stockbrokers rubbing the statue there every day for luck on their way to work. visited macey, omg sooo huge, didnt buy anything, so off putting cos its so huge and too much choice...visited bloomingdales and did buy several little brown bags....visited century 21, didnt buy anything, great if u like a rummage but we didnt want to spend too much time in there browsing.....seemed to buy touristy t/shirts, hoodies and souvenirs....very good prices, popped into abercrombie & fitch with a list of things to buy for others, omg what a nightmare!!!lasted bout 20 mins and waited outside for girlfriends, only managed to get only a couple of listed items (btw internet names for clothes do not correspond with wots instore, sales assistant couldnt help us with e.g.pink long sleeved betsy, she was too busy dancing around lol)

got to east village on sunday night for drinks on our last night but were disappointed to not find that much going on, didnt feel that comfortable there to be honest, got stared at and doormen/ barstaff were quite unfriendly...yes we did tip them, lol.... getting bit tipsy anyway so headed back to times square and found somewhere to end the night and then head back to the hotel

found drinks expensive in new york, yes we thought they would be, but $60 in some places for 4 vodka/redbulls, $40 for 4 beers certainly took its toll out of the kitty

found the delis were brilliant for breakfast and lunch, really fantastic choice and reasonable prices, just great

all in all had a fantastic time but it seemed to go so quickly, spent so much time reading up on new york, particularly this thread, absolutely invaluable!!!

btw got train down to manchester airport, flights with delta were good, we were lucky to get xtra leg room there and back, bout an hour to hotel from jfk in yellow cab.....very tiring travelling but sooo worth it
