public toilets in new york.... = none... there are none...
however, every bar, starbucks and department store have some.... i've never had an issue.. yeah, i've had to buy a pint or a drink in a bar, and then nip to the loo....

as for limits bringing back from the US. it is a NON EU country, so you are limited to 200 cigarettes OR 50g of tobacco per person... buy on the plane, not at the airport, as it is probably the cheapest... especially if you are flying on a US carrier.. i think i paid $24 for 200 cigs last time...

However, what you are looking for is the rest room. I used several in shops, restaurants, and visitor attractions, and they're fine. Slightly disconcerting because a) the water level is generally higher in the bowl than we're used to so it looks like it's about to overflow and b) doors tend to be hung differently, with no overlap between door and frame, so you can see out the edges of the doors, so feels slightly less private. But it's actually fine!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Oddly enough the one thing I dont like about NY is their toilets the very high water level can cause some issues, if ya know what I mean.
Anyway if push comes to shove just pop into the nearest fast food place and pay your 99c for a drink and then use their facilites, assuming there are no big dept stores close by.
all the best

Yeah the loo situation isn't a problem. Restrooms and Lounges in all the department stores as Markymoo says. There also seemed to be a Starbucks every two blocks.
The Battery Park toilets could maybe be considered 'public'... as well as some in Central Park, no?
Noticed the gaps in the doors as soon as we landed ... different
Don't know what the hotels would be like at night. Take ours for example people could come in and use the facilities on the 15th floor through the day, but at night you needed your card to get past the man at the front door... or maybe he just thought I looked a dodger.MFiT-T6: #38

I am sorry, me again!
Has anyone ever eaten at The Rainbow room in NY? I am torn between the glitz and glamour of the Rainbow room and the views and resonable menu at The View (ontop of the Times Sq Marriot) for a special romantic dinner when we are there at Christmas.
In the typicall way for a woman I want it all, good food, good views, good price and good atmosphere..... does this exist???
Unfortunatly The Boathouse in Central Park is booked out to private parties during our stay so unable to get a reservation there!
Any recommendations?
Thanks everyone, and I promise once I've been I'll report back all the highs and lows!0 -
Hi,
We are going to be in NY for NYE and would like to go for a meal and drinks in Tribeca and then on to Central Park for the fireworks.
I am looking at places to eat at the moment and am torn between places such as Walkers and Tribeca Tavern or somewhere like Bubble lounge.
Has anyone been to any of these places or do you have any ideas on where to go in tribeca for NYE?
The only other option we have considered is going to one of the places in Times Square and paying the evening charge for the bar and food and staying there all night. I would rather not do this as i think the logistics of getting home afterwards will be a nightmare. If it is a must do then we will think about it more, I just do not fancy standing in a pen for 8 hours+ on the street.
Any help or advise or what you have done on NYE storys appreciated.0 -

i have only gone to the venues for drinks so appreciate that this is only partially useful. The View was cheaper for drinks (had champagne) and, imo, better for the view as it is always changing. We saw the buffet food on offer and it looked good. We went all togged up in dress and tux (him, not me!) and did not look out of place and got a great table by the window. Then went to rainbow room for cocktails which is a lot dearer. The view was a bit foggy unfortunately but the drinks were good and the piano player added to the atmos. I preferred the View as it had more of an atmosphere though and I felt more relaxed. Hope this helps a bit.0 -

Hi Lisaloo
I haven't actually been to NY yet so cant give you any specific advise but in planning for my trip at Christmas I have found www.opentable.com really usefull for finding resturants in NY. They do lists of resturants by type, price, location and they do speciallity lists such as best resturants for views, romance, familys etc. Its definatly worth checking out. The website also allows you to book your tables online too to avoid dissapointment when you get there.
I've also heard a lot of good things about http://www.zagat.com/ which is apparantly popular with the locals to NY looking for new places to eat.
I am sure you'll find somewhere great though! Have fun!!! :j0 -

Hello, this is my very first post on this forum, my name is chris. The girlfriend and i are going out to NY 19 dec - 23rd for my birthday on the 21st. I'll be turning 20
abit gutted about the age restriction for alcohol but we're going for the shopping mainly anyway. Well my first of probably many questions is do you think its a better idea to take some cash in notes ie for all the tipping and small stuff like snacks/food etc and then the real spending cash on a prepaid mastercard? this is the first time we have ever flown anywhere on our own (what a place to start) lol but are looking forward but both pretty much crapping ourselves, this thread is great too, very informative. It would be great for even more advice, so i'll be back with more questions soon! thanks, chris
