hmmm... JFK airport...... driving....... *giggles quietly to oneself*
seriously.... have you seen the roads around JFK..
same rules apply with regards to the taxi drivers..and i never recommend travelling on public transport.. only when in the city do i recommend that, getting to and from the airport, is one of the few luxuries i give myself on my NYC Trips!and if you want someone with a sense of direction, a good knowledge of the NYC subway system... you can hire my services, for the cost of a flight, and a hotel room.. i'm more than willing to be a guide for you... *grins*Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

the roads leading to jfk are busy but no real problem ...however like any other strange city i'd only drive through necessity.
now as to the question of car hire i would price up 2 options that i
have used .
1. price up hertz from north white plains with a one way rental from there to JFK ...there's various CDP's that can be used and a search of the internet may find a suitable one. anyway hertz's depot at north white plains is literally across the street from north white plains station which is on the harlem line on the metro north railroad ....cheap and easy to use from GCT (grand central station)
2. price up picking the car up from newark airport and dropping off at JFK .
both of these options have saved me a fair bit of money and the north white plains one would be my 1st choice if stopping in the city before picking up a rental ....i'd also add that if you look at something like google maps you'll see that hertz's depot is really close to some of the major routes at the north end of NY.
if you price it up and it looks like you are interested i can give further details
Is there a US equivalent of the traveline site, out of interest? Probably a silly question, but if you don't ask you don't find out ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
SOMEHOW we have to get out of NYC and towards Wildwood. And back again. Hire a car / public transport - is there some third way I'm missing? because presumably even in America there's a limit to how far you can go by taxi ...
a taxi will never take you that far.. from JFK you are looking at 170 miles.
The route seems quite simple to be honest, especially when you get into NJ...
Clicky!
the other option is a flight down to atlantic city, and public transport from there...0 -
See, that's what I thought: I just hadn't factored in you giving me the heebie-jeebies about driving away from JFK.
In an ideal world, SOMEONE in my family would have looked at a map and said "Let's go THERE for a couple of days before we go to Wildwood." (And THERE would be somewhere other than Portland, Oregon, which even I have worked out is the wrong side of America.) And I would say "Yes, fine, let's hop on a train or bus and go there or thereabouts, then hire a car there or thereabouts."
But I am all idea-ed out right now. And TBH I would rather it was somewhere that was more inland than Atlantic City: I think a weekend in Wildwood is going to be more than enough of the New Jersey coast ...
I think I need a holiday ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi, am looking for 2 flights Glasgow - New York for about a week between 30/08/08 and 09/09/08. Cheapest I could find direct was £797!! Am willing to travel from Edinburgh or Manchester or go via London for the cheapest deal. £428 seems to be the best.. can anyone beat that ? Can't use some of the flightcheckers cos my work has them blocked !!0

can i ask why you posted this in both the cheap flights and the generic new york thread??
MAN - NYC - £348 with Continental - Change at Gatwick - Fly TO JFK,
fly back FROM EWR change at Heathrow
yeah ok.. a ballache, but hell.. its £348!!!
Direct from MAN - £426 (is it worth paying so much more for 2 hours of your time!)
Glasgow to NYC - Change at Philadelphia - £357 (US Air)
Glasgow to NYC - Direct - £549 (Continental)
Hope that helps

yeah.. it is best to get booked as soon as you see a price you like
I've flown with US Airways TATL at least 4 or 5 times, i've lost count...
even if you have the cheapest ticket possible, what you can do, is upgrade for only $500, not money saving I know, but on the way back when you're tired and want to sleep, it might be worthwhile.... and doing that is ALWAYS cheaper than booking a bus class ticket anyway!!!0 -

now please don't anyone shout at me if the answer is obvious 'cos I'm a little stressed right now and running out of time, but will we save money by pre-booking trains like we would in the UK? Because if not that's one less job to do before we leave! :eek:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OK hammy I have wimped out completely, sent you a PM, but basically have discovered a reasonable train service from Iselin to and from NYC, and as that's as much on the way to anywhere we're likely to end up going as anywhere I'm going to hire our car from there ...

Although if I don't start packing soon I guess it will all be irrelevant anyway! :rotfl: Going up to the in-laws tomorrow ready to start the fun!Signature removed for peace of mind0
