elDeeJay - 2 options... get a sim card for the USA. that's what i've got, but i have used it on many trips...

i'm not sure about the prepaid cards.. never used them..
as for free wifi... there is LOADS about in NYC... less than there used to be, but still plenty, walk a block or so, and you'll find some... a lot of the parks actually have free wifi in as well.. so skype might be useful..

    ---

hot and humid months.. well.. buy a bottle of water.. half the plan of what you actually want to do, unless you're going to spend hours inside an air con'd building... make sure when the bottle of water is empty, you buy another one within minutes...

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can buy holiday insurance for my trip to New York. A misunderstanding between myself and my husband means that we've not yet got any.......I'm going on Thursday!

I've also looked at the weather forecast and it looks like it's going to rain - I'm having a bit of a panic on what to pack now. If it's hot and humid but very wet what kind of clothes should I wear? I suppose a rain mac is a must!!
    :beer:MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS:beer:

i get my travel insurance through columbus... used to see loads of adverts for them on the tube in london, not had to use it, so can't comment on things like customer service, however, price is very competitive to be honest..

There will be tips in Martin's article on travel insurance, which you'll find in here. Somewhere ...

If you don't have anything wrong with you, it should be relatively straightforward to find something which meets your needs at a reasonable price (and I've also used Columbus). Even if you do have pre-existing conditions, I used to find that although I couldn't just 'do' insurance online I could usually get it for the same price as the online quote after phoning and answering a few simple questions.

Which reminds me, I still need to sort ours out!

Hello all I am planning to go to New York this year for christmas with my fiance but I really dont know the first thing to do, I have never been abroad with him. We would like to stay until about the 28ish from the 22ndish? Can anyone help with any tips, hotels to stay etc. Also what is the weather like in December, are the prices more expensive at christmas, do they have sales etc? I dont know whether to go before or after christmas?

i'm going to answer this as kindly as i can

tips - hotels - check out around 50 pages of this thread of tips and hints, and also there is a cheap hotels in new york thread as well.. probably only about 20 pages there....

weather - cold... do a google search for december weather in NYC and you'll see what it is like..

prices more expensive... hmm... flights maybe, hotels maybe not, maybe so... thanksgiving is bigger out in the USA, so you might be luckier with Christmas, not affecting your prices that much

sales? NYC is a permanent sale!

was the last one a question or an answer.. go before or after christmas.. i thought you wanted to go over christmas? *confuzzled*

Hi, first post, so sorry if if wrong place. I'm getting lots of info from this thread so thanks.

I am looking to go to New york and Miami next may from Manchester, currently looking at Continental flights. I have a couple of questions please, the outbound flight to from Miami is via new york with a stop of 1 hour 50 mins and change of plane. Do I have to collect luggage and then re check it in? Have I enough time to make the connection?

Second is on the inbound from Miami again the plane stops at New York and I would like to stop for 6 nights. I have searched for this as a multicity ticket which is £602, but if I search for a return ticket form MAN tro MIA the price is about £50 cheaper - I thought continental did a free stopover, is this so and how do I book it to get the lower price. I am wanting MAN to MIA 14/5/09. MIA to EWR 23/5/09 and EWR to MAN 29/5/09. Am I booking too early as the flights have only just been released, but I don't want to be paying more than £602 and I daren't leave it too late to book as I already have a cruise booked out of Miami.

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Sue

I can answer some of your questions and have done the Newark (EWR) thing with Continental quite a few times now.

You should be OK with that connection time but it would be slightly tighter than I would go for if I had a choice. Last time we hade a connection time of 1 hour 45 and we made it by the skin of our teeth

You get off the plane, walk for miles ;) until you reach Immigration. Queue for a bit, clear that, pick up cases, go through Customs and hopefully don't get searched.

You then drop off your cases again (which is very very quick, we've never had to queue) and go back through Security to get onto your next flight. This can take ten minutes or so if it's busy.

I like to have a minimum of two hours so I have a chance to freshen up and grab a bite to eat:)

That said, you should be OK with your connection as long as your plane from Manchester is on time.

I may be off to NY in 2 weeks time for a business trip. Only have 2 whole days plus half a Saturday to myself plus the evenings so want to cram in the important things to see and do and places to eat of course....the 2 days I'll have free are Sunday and Monday. Any advice??
