I'm going to do my shopping list today (quiet day at work, I'm not pretending I don't skive sometimes!) and post it here later.

This will be based on Sainsburys and Asda prices I think. Hopefully I can make savings elsewhere if i spot a bargain. I reckon I am going to do 2 two week shops otherwise I bet everything will go off and it will all be wasted!

    xx

Are you comparing the prices on mysupermarket.com?

A few of my tips would be -

Get surfing on the internet for pasta, rice and potato based recipes. Cheap and fillng.

If you use cheapy shampoo also use it to clean the bath. It cuts through human's body grease (as intended to for hair) and really brings off soap and grease residue on the bath and basin really well.
Also use shampoo on DP work shirts collars. I just smear the shampoo on the collars and the shirts can be washed at 30 degrees and come up sparklingly clean. No grubby collars left.

Hair conditioner can doubled up and be used as shaving foam...Sun cream as face moisteriser, a dribble of washing up liquid as bubble bath and even unused cooking oil as body moisteriser. (Wear old clothes after applying)

I prefer washing liquid (2 in 1s)to powders because...you can water them down double fold so you get twice as much for your money (just remember to shake up well after adding the water.) Put the liquid in the ball and straight into the machine so it gets to work on your clothes straight away and unlike powder it wont clog your drawer or machine up. Also doesnt leave that chalky residue on dark clothes when you use a cool wash like powder can do. And of course you don't need a conditoner if you buy a two in one. Asda does some great own brand liquids.

You can make one egg do two people by whisking with a small amount of milk, add pepper. Dip slice of bread in mixture on both sides and fry (in virtually dry pan) for two mins each side. Tasty, filling eggy bread.

Frozen grapes taste fabulous and you tend to eat less. Same with any chocolate treats you buy.

If your buying smart price fruit rather than organic, remember to peel off the sink coz they will be covered in pesticides and fertilisers.

If you buy tinned fruit, dont throw juice away...freeze for ice lollys, tastey ice cubes for drinks or use to soak raisins/sultanas in for succulent fruits when baking.

Use teabags twice/mix a cheap coffee (Asdas smartprice coffee granules is only 37pence and its 100 % ground coffee nothing added.) with a more expensive brand for full flavour at a fraction of the cost. Full fat milk watered down with half water still tastes rich and goes further. If you use suager in your tea, start adding only half a spoonful rather than a full teaspoonful. Within a couple of days a full spoon will seem too sweet.

Turkey mince has less fat than beef mince and is usually less than beef steak mince. It's also very good to make meatballs or curry.

Bulk out meats with pulses, pastas, grated or sliced veg, grated potato, oats even rice.

Oats are fabulous for breakfast or supper. Cheap and wholesome.
Add a handful of raisins or half a chopped banana if you get bored of plain porridge.

Buy some cress seeds. Easy and quick to grow, tasty, nutritous and really add flavour to a bland salads and sandwhichs.

Good luck with your challenge, it sounds very interesting. I shall be watching to see how you get on.

My supermarket.com is great - I do all my price checking on there. Also they do ipoints (is that right?) the only time you'll get points back for shopping at Asda.

Just had my big monthly shop from Asda delivered free. Brilliant service - no subsitutions and within 1/2 an hour of the start of the delivery slot.

Only cost £62.00 and that's for 3 of us.

    EM xx

  • This works out pretty cheap, I give it to my cats once a week or so as a treat:

Open a tin of sardines (my cats prefer the ones in tomato sauce  )
Buzz a slice of bread in the liquidiser to make crumbs.
Mash up the sardines with the bread, add a bit of water if it's too dry. One tin of sardines makes one meal for three cats (eg. half a day's food).
Last time I used tinned wild salmon (bought for 75% off, normally it's too pricey) and also added a few mashed up cooked peas and a clove of garlic (it's supposed to be good for keeping fleas off them). That went down a treat with them as well.

(One warning: Don't ever give your cat anything with onions in it, it's not good for them.)

    :A
I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.
  • What's your hot & sour soup recipe? I absolutely love the stuff.. have been making the Thai version (Tom Yum) at home from some packets of paste I got, but interested to know how others make it :)

For an asian style spicy soup I start with a watered down HM chicken stock, add a little shredded cooked chicken (or some cooked veg), add spring onions, a little garlic, chopped chilli (with or without seeds to taste), soy, lemon juice and if you have them chopped mint/coriander/parsley (I grow these, so I add all, generously)

to turn into a 'complete' (as opposed to a lighter) meal I add some noodles and stir until all is hot....
  • I've just remembered another tip. Buy a bag of quinoa (pronounced 'keenwa') from the health food shop and use it instead of couscous and rice. It is highly nutritious and packed with amino acids and full of goodness. Its worth looking at the 'price per pound' ratio of food in terms of nutritional value i.e. soya beans are cheaper per pound of protein than meat.

Bamby and Pandora what a great load of info!

Quick question, is basics/value pasta ok?
Does it go really soggy and bad or can you actually get it to stay in shape?

Tescos £1 for a massive bag tubes are really good, they don't fall apart at all, the worst i have found for disintegrating is the quick cook pasta!

sometimes i use a packet paste version from the chinese supermarket but when i make my own it involves chinese rice vinegar (sour) and ground white pepper (hot).

i'll post the recipe later when i get home from work :)
