I managed to feed 3 adults once for 4 weeks on £65 to £70, we're not veggie. I did start out with a full store cupboard though.
We had porrige for breakfast every day
    Liver & Onions
Rubber Chicken Roast on sunday, Pie on Tuesday, risotto or special fried rice on Wednesday, soup on Thursday
I made a spag bol & a cottage pie from one pack of Value Mince 63p by adding lentils, vegies & oats to the mix.
    Tuna pasta bake
Roast breast of lamb, £1.29 for the lamb & made soup from the left overs.
A large pack of Bacon trimmings was 99p I made Potato, onion & bacon hotpot, Macaroni cheese, with a small handful of the of bacon added & made pea & ham soup & lentil soup with the last few bits. HTH

  • I'm so annoyed  I just spent ages typing out a really long reply and it disappeared when I clicked 'submit'.

The gist of it was - Sainsburys Basics fruit and veg are really good at the moment at my local branch, and our super-fussy cats love Sainsburys dried food, so if soaking and mashing works for you, maybe you could try that brand.

I described in graphic detail our cats' bowl dancing when the food isn't up to scratch but I haven't the heart to do it all again....

    Good luck!

Don't forget frozen veg, which can often be cheaper than fresh or tinned. Sainsbury do a 1kg bag of Basics frozen veg (granted it is mainly carrots but does have peas, green beans and a bit of sweetcorn in it too) for 49p, which works out at about 5p per serving.

I was surprised to see how cheap tins of mince & onion can be. Sainsburys and also Tesco's are 48p, and you can get a tin of spuds or a packet of instant mash for around 24p, so cottage pie for two people for 72p, plus 10p for veg (which you can mix into the mince if you prefer).

Then there is tinned veggie curry for 68p, which with 10p worth of Basics rice and some crusty bread still works out at less than £1 for two.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Just wanted to point out that the original poster did say her cat had no teeth, so unless she will accept dry food mushed up with water, dry cat food is a no no!!

    Good luck!

    Lol thanks Dilly.
Ive never tried the mashed up thing with biscuits but she is fussy and I doubt she would eat it.

I am just formulating a shopping list based on Sainsburys stuff, will see how I go from there.

We've decided we will probably do a big cooking sesh and freeze most of the meals so the food doesn't go off. Having said that we might need to do 2 weeks shopping and then another two weeks to fit it in the freezer!

Are household products and toiletries including in your £15 p/w or do you already have those in stock?

I was just thinking about that a minute ago, it would have to include that too. I have a good stockpile from days when I had money so I should be ok although the Mr tends to always run out of things when we have no money! So I will plan for that! :o

I also just remembered that Home Bargains (i think its a small chain) in Northampton do a pack of about 16 loo rolls for only £3-4, they should last us the whole month!
