HM Popcorn?

  • My hubby makes popcorn and then just adds a cup of demerara sugar. The sugar melts instantly and sticks to the popcorn. The trick is to pour the sugar in immediately while the popcorn is still piping hot.

Toffee popcorn used to be very popular in our household, it is now banned due to an accident a few years ago. Hubby was pouring the hot toffee into the popcorn when DD who was about 8 at the time impulsively grabbed the spoon to mix it - getting scalding hot toffee on her hand in the process. Drs said it was a miracle she didn't need a skin graft. If you do make the toffee stuff make sure there are no kids in the kitchen.

When I make popcorn I use about 1oz butter, melted and with a tbsp or so of golden syrup and a little sugar, and a very good shake of cinnamon to it. Pour it over the popcorn and try to resist!

    Yum!

  • Thanks for those!! Kinkyjinks your recipe is similar to the one I had best success with, but has less syrup. My recipe has 2 tbsp and it is too syrupy. I was going to try it with less, so glad to see it works!

I did bake some in the oven, just a small amount first which was lovely, so I put the rest in but at the wrong temp so it's all overcooked!

I will have another go at the weekend, thanks for the help!!

I have been making my popcorn in the microwave lately, but every single container I have used has ended up with kernel shaped melted bits in the plastic. Even when I used containers which said suitable for use in microwave.
Has anyone come across a container which will take the heat please? Something not expensive please. Definitely got to be cheaper than doing it on the hob. Took forever to heat a heavy bottomed pot enough to start them popping, whereas they start in seconds in the MW.

My kids love savoury popcorn so i use soy sauce on it, the kids love the saltyness.

I've just tried the butter and icing sugar method and it works very well, I'll be popular when the kids get home :)

    Hi Rosie,

I've been roasting bags similar to these to make my own popcorn in the microwave......

I really get good results with them! And then I just wash them out to be reused! A little olive oil and lots of salt is my favourite :)

  • Hello, I love popcorn but never make it myself despite having a popcorn maker (very cute duck, the popcorn comes out of his mouth when popped) but never been successful flavouring it. You can't put oil or anything into the machine so salt or sugar never sticks. Really sweet or toffee popcorn are my favourite but rather than making up a batch of toffee sauce I wondered if anyone had any simple and maybe even healthy ways to top the popcorn and get it to actually stick rather than just falling through to the bottom of the bowl. Thanks

You coat the cooked popcorn. ( so you can still use your duck) then put in the oven for the coating to 'stick'.

I think there is a popcorn thread, but there are loads you can do.....recipes and ideas abound online. :).

For sweet low cal you can just sprinkle a little with artificial sweetener. It's nothing like as delicious as toffee popcorn.

We like savoury ones too, without returning to the oven I sometimes sprinkle with salt, finely chopped thyme and lemon juice.
