Hi Callumpster,
I melt about 2oz butter in a pan on the hob and add a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar and a about half a tablespoon of water. Stir over a gentle heat until the sugar dissolves then add the popped corn and stir until it's evenly coated. This gives a lovely buttery, caramel flavour.
As zippy mentioned there's an earlier thread with lots more ideas so I'll add your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

I've looked in Asda, Sainsburys, Coop, Waitrose and 2 branches of Tesco for some popping corn without success. We don't have a Morrisons nearby. I looked in the home baking section and the healthy seeds and nuts section of each.
I could probably get some at Holland and Barratt but that would mean a special trip into town and I expect it would be quite dear.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?0 -
Hi guys, I need some help making popcorn! I bought a bag yesterday and followed the instructions....melt 1oz of butter in a pan, add the kernels, put the lid on and shake over the heat. I did this but it just burnt!!! I decided to try it in the microwave. It kept popping so I kept increasing the time. I think it probably had about 5mins on full power then I stopped it as I was worried about it burning. Only half of the kernals had popped but some of the ones that had were slightly burnt. How long and what power should I be doing it for (the micro is 800W and I used 2oz of kernels).
Also toppings...on the bag of kernals it said to use sugar or salt. I added sugar but just ended up with plain popcorn with sugar in the bottom of the bowl. What can I use to make it a bit sweeter/tastier?
Thanks0 -

Can't remember the name but it is in a blue box with 3 bags inside (butter flavour i think is what my dd's like) my microwave is 800 as well, dd puts it in for 3mins, after about 2 mins you should hear it start popping, then she takes it out, gives it a shake then pops (lol) it back n for 1 min. After its finished leave it for 1 min then open bag and shake sugar in and shake bag (dd uses caster sugar) There are always some not popped in bottom of the bag, don't know why?
Really nice popcorn.. and less than £1!

Ohhh! I love home popcorn.
I put a decent layer of oil (not marg/butter - surely the salt would make it more likely to burn??!) and put enough popcorn kernals to give one layer only. Heat the oil until the kernals go a much lighter colour and probably one will pop. I then take it off the heat and give it a shake. Then put on heat, take off, shake, and repeat until nearly all pop. There are always a few that never pop. I wouldn't leave on the heat for too long. The lid will keep most of the heat in.
Icing sugar is quite good but if you really want a treat, warmed syrup is lush!!I have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat - Rebecca West

I do something quite similar, few glugs of oil in pan, cup (old fashioned size - proper tea cup) I add a couple of tablespoons of normal sugar to the cup.
Heat the oil til it's hot, add the popcorn and sugar whack the lid on and hold it over the heat. Shake it all the time while keeping it hot and you should get lovely sweet popcorn. Don't wait til all the "pops" stop cos it will burn, wait until there's only one every 5-10 secs or so. The idea is hot and quick x
I hope that helps and I really wish I had some in the cupboard now!#118 DFW Debt freely Christmas 2012 Challenge0 -
i always find that microwave popcorn is less likely to burn if you use 80% power rather than full whack. may take a few seconds longer but you dont seem to get that hot spot which causes it to ignite:money:squaaaaaaaaacccckkkkkk!!!! :money:0
