I'm intrigued by this as well as I have a tub of popping corn waiting to be popped too! I've done it before and sprinkled either caster sugar or salt on it but the kids weren't very inspired and it wasn't as yummy as the toffee stuff.0

My favourite flavouring is butter and brown sugar. Melt about 2oz butter on the hob and add a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar and a about half a tablespoon of water. Stir over a gentle heat until the sugar dissolves then add the popped corn and stir until it's evenly coated. This gives a lovely buttery, caramel flavour.
There's an earlier thread with lots more ideas so I'll add your thread to it to keep the ideas together.

Thanks Pink, I just did the above but I used white sugar as I have run out of brown, it is soooooo delicious and cost pence. x0 -
I wanted to make the kids some popcorn this afternoon as they ate their lunch really nicely. After promising them they could watch it pop I heated up some oil in a pan, sprinkled a little popping corn in, and put the lid on. Corn started popping but must have got too hot.
Result - Burnt pop corn, lots of burnt kernels, dissapointed kids, upset pregnant mummy!
So I decided to do it as per the instructions on the bag (microwave it).
Put it in a lidded container and microwave for 3 minutes.
Result - Lid popped off and popcorn that did pop went all over the microwave, the stuff that didn't welded itself to the bottom of my tupperware container and appears to have tried to pop downwards because container is full of dents now. Again, i was NOT happy.
But, the stuff that did pop went to the kids and they seemes to enjoy eating the sugar out of the bowl full of popcorn!
Annoyed that the sugar didn't stick I decided it must need butter.
Made another batch as above then as soon as it cooked stuck a knob of butter in the pot with some sugar, put lid on and shook.
Result - A lump of butter with sugar and popcorn stuck to it...
I am usually a great cook (maybe the pregnancy hormones are making me thick!) but cannot seem to master popcorn so if anyone could give me some tips on where I'm going wrong I'd be very grateful!June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

Thanks VIJ, not sure I have a glass bowl but may try with my pyrex jug or another glass dish. I know what you mean about bad kitchen days, I make awesome pastry and always have done but one day for some reason my shortcrust kept cracking and I got so cross that by the second batch I threw it all over the kitchen and didn't make any again for a year!June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

Oh dear,
Its been while since I've made popcorn but I used to use a dry pan, sometimes with the smallest amount of oil rubbed over the pan. Don't have the pan too hot either just a medium heat, kernels in, lid on and fingers crossed
For sweet I just add a bit of sugar to the pan once they have nearly all popped and a little bit of butter and give them a shake about on a very low heat
good luck for next time0 -
On the hob, the key is to shake the pan constantly once its started popping. I've made popcorn millions of times & its (nearly) always worked fine! It works with oil and butter but butter tastes nicer. I tend to use quite a high heat - as long as you shake, shake, shake its fine. (Make sure you hold the lid down whilst shaking or it'll end up coming off & you'll have popcorn everywhere).
Never tried in a microwave, didn't know you could.
To sweeten I either shake icing sugar on, or heat up some sugar and water in a pan to make a kind of caramel then add the popcorn to it and coat. Allow to cool before eating though!
I might have to make some myself tonight!:dance:0 -
For the pan I use a tiny bit of oil and add a small amount of popcorn as it expands so much its unreal! Keep it moving by shaking every minute or too. I figure I'd rather give the popcorn room to expand and have to do 2 batches rather than ruin it by leaving too little room.
My mum has now given me a popcorn maker instead as she had one she never used. Its fab... only I have to make sure I have a big bowl handy (even if I'm only doing a little) as it does tend to shoot out popcorn like a not very well aimed auromatic rifle! lol!Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

I too do it in a pyrex dish in the microwave after several burnt attempts on the hob. We've found its nice with some of that grated italian hard cheese in a tub shaken over it (ok we call it parmesan even though its not really).:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0

Pop a knob of butter in a pan - it needs to get quite hot before you put in the popcorn, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan, if you put too much in it won't have enough room to pop. Put the lid on and shake it when it starts to pop.0
