LS...CAMP AMERICA has been going for years...I've several friends who did it back in the late 80's and early 90's and really benefited from the experience....but I cant comment on what its like nowadays.

I do however have the view that any international experience is good and actually broadens the mind, body and soul beyond that possibly achieved on home soil.

DS1 is looking towards uni next year and has chosen only courses that will provide one year of international study,or a foreign work placement so I think its something that is much more easy to do and less daunting for youngsters today than perhaps when we were making those types of choices.
Thank you. I just worry about him. His dyslexia makes things tricky for him, I worry about him missing flights and stuff because he can't read departure boards!

He has talked about doing it for ages, I'm actually the one who suggested it. I just don't know if he should wait another year. Plus need to check his college course actually finishes early enough!

its a difficult choice isn't it.

My youngest did the YHA future leader course but its only one week in the middle of the summer holidays. It did though have a huge impact

a bit off the wall but has he thought about writing a letter and sending his CV to Outward Bound - a long shot but always worth writing letters.

Kings camp looks good with being so close and then he could maybe still do his other activities around it - eg weekend camps with cubs
Thanks mhoc, was hoping you'd come on! I think he could volunteer with NCS as well, although don't think that's paid at all, whereas Kings Camps are and would look really good on his CV. Need a proper sit down chat with him I think.

Hello everyone, not been on for a while been ultra busy.
LS, my DD has done Camp America, only last summer in fact and she thoroughly enjoyed the entire time and has made some amazing friendships. There are a lot of Americans who do it too and she was invited to stay with friends and family of some girls from the camp as she traveled round America before heading home. She came back skint though as you do just break even with what you pay to do the experience to what they pay you for completing it.
She said it was hard work, very hard work but really worth it, it is non stop though very rarely a day off but the traveling at the end made it worth her while.
