Great - thanks Jem16. Gutted Im so limited. The only other solution I can think of is broadband satellite, do you have any thoughts on this? Ive read what people say and theyve said theres latency issues, and no company can guarantee fast speeds.

    Main thing - very expensive.

However there should be no need for it as you should be able to get this fixed. What speed do you get when it's not on a go slow?

    Stats would be helpful.

Question one should be how are the speeds measured over WiFi ??

Not so good! You appear to be on a Market 1 exchange with no LLU providers so you're pretty much stuck with the likes of PlusNet, BT themselves or BT Wholesalers. Virgin isn't available either.
The likes of Zen or A&A would be available, who are independent ISPs using BT for their backhaul connectivity (A&A also offer talktalk backhaul as an option on ADSL connections where available).

So, two of the best ISPs in the country are available to the OP. Neither are BT, nor are they BT resellers. I don't know what a "BT wholesaler" is.

I think I am correct in saying - Zen and AA are BT wholesalers relying on the BT infrastructure and buying from bt wholesale like all the other bt resellers/wholesalers.

    - If the issue is with line length and sync speed going to a premium isp isnt going to help one bit.

What speed does your router sync at?
Does this match the predictor on the BT wholesale checker?
    is fibre available?

    Pop your number in:

Neither are BT, nor are they BT resellers.

I don't remember saying they were.
I don't know what a "BT wholesaler" is.

Then perhaps you should find out before apparently jumping down my throat.

A BT Wholesaler is a provider that uses BT Wholesale equipment to provide the service, which in a Market 1 exchange, they all are, including Zen and A&A and even PlusNet and BT. ( I only mentioned those two separately as the OP is already with PlusNet and had mentioned moving to BT)

Some providers are simply BT Resellers but then I didn't mention that term, did I?

My speed it consistently slow (has been for months). Im not at home now so cant do a speed test. Ive just tried the adselchecker link and it only comes back with:

    Featured Products

    Downstream Line Rate(Mbps)

    Upstream Line Rate(Mbps)

    Downstream Range(Mbps)

    Availability Date

ADSL Max Up to 8 -- 7 to 8 Available
    Fixed Rate 2 -- -- Available

(sorry - that didnt paste well).

What speed does your router sync at?
Do I login my router to get that info?

Do you think either Zen or A&A could get me faster speeds? Or is it just customer support that theyd be better at?

Yes you do. Which PlusNet router do you have?

What Zen can give you and what Plusnet can give you will be exactly the same as they're using the same BT equipment at the exchange. It will be no different no matter who you move to. This is why it's important to get this looked at before you move really if it is a fault of some description.

Customer Support is the only thing that will vary. PlusNet used to be good but has gone downhill a bit.

Ok - post back if you're not sure how to get them.

I'm going to assume it's the 582n you have - so follow this for line stats.

    If it's not that one then have a look here;

Zen sound fairly competent when I've talked to them. I imagine that they would deal with the issue much better than the BT Indian call centres, which I found always had to run through their script, regardless of how many times you had been through it before.

My contract with Zen doesn't seem to tie me in for more than 1 month, so it would be relatively easy to walk away if you didn't like the service. Zen aren't one of the cheaper suppliers, but if you don't want the customer service to be too cheap, they are worth considering.
