Gosh thank-you so much! I never realised I could do that, it would work really well going to Phuket and returning from Singapore and still (as of tonight) under £2k with Emirates.

Air Asia fly between Singapore and Phuket, so you could do an open jaw ticket Lon-sin, hkt-Lon on one itinerary with sin-hkt on air Asia separately.

Sounds like you are fairly flexible, which should mean you get flights for less than £2500 and nearer £1950.

Many aircraft on the long haul sectors have 3-4-3 and/or 2-4-2 seating, which means the four of you should be able to sit together.

    That's better ;)

OP can do the same itinerary with THAI for around £2000 if they prefer to do the long haul to Asia direct, with a shorter flight to HKT/SIN.

    Example:

    or

    THAI1.jpg

Personally I'm ok with having time to stretch my legs in the middle of the journey. But perhaps with children, the OP may think differently.
With reference to what richardw stated; with Emirates you'll be on a A380(3-4-3) and a 777(3-4-3). With THAI: A380(3-4-3) 777(3-3-3)

The problem with the Emirates 777 in 3-4-3 is that you lose an inch in seat width in comparison to a 777 in 3-3-3. 17" compared to 18". Plus you'll be on that flight for longer. Perhaps not an issue if you have two children who aren't that wide. :) With THAI you'll mainly be on the A380, with the 777 just for the short haul flights.

So you have a lot of good information with which to make a decision.

Although the 3-4-3 configuration can be an advantage on a less than half full Emirates flight if you are tall and need the four seats across the centre row to stretch out 'flat bed' style in the economy cabin. I contentedly did this all the way SIN-DXB / DXB-AMS yesterday, in fact the flights were so quiet that a family of four could easily 'flat bed' each, but I don't know how seasonal these lightly booked flights are.

I've started using the Hopper app to let me know when is a good time to buy, seems ok so far, lets me know when it's rising and whether to ride it out based on historical data. Proof will be in the pudding of course but you could download the app and see what it reckons?

Royal Jordanian are doing Business Class LHR to Bangkok for under £1K.
Economy may be well priced too

I only paid £400 odd, flying out early May, coming back mid June. Keep an eye on skyscanner and Travelsupermarket as they have different offers. I think I booked through eb bonkers in the end as I got cashback through topcashback once Id seen the different options

Not really relevant to the OP. Though I've been looking at flight throughout this year and have been able to achieve less than £300 return to BKK on many occasions with different airlines.
This has really been the year of low flight prices.

I meant ebookers, blooming spell check. It is as it's just a case of timing it right and playing with the dates. I booked my flight to Oz a few months back for £660, now it's £1300 for the same flight. You've just got to play with the dates, airports, airlines until you get a price you are happy with. I think they all have offers on, it's just about timing. The other thing is it might be worth looking into flights out of Dublin/ Amsterdam as you'll end up paying in euros which isn't too bad at the mo and although one flight extra can save a small fortune (saved me £300 odd and if I had booked it now it would be £2000 from London- that's with ba too bar the flight to dublin which is ryanair)
