I suppose it depends on whether your tank is 'half empty' or 'half full'.

Fuel tank's always half full; beer glass is always half empty :p

This thread's really got me thinking now - if you fill the tank to the top then run the car until it's almost empty before filling up again, would this not work out the same as keeping the tank around the halfway mark on average over time?

I can feel the smoke coming out of my ears already! :rotfl:

Isn't it always the same? You only use, what you use - whether that's 10 x 1/10th of the tank or 1 x the whole tank :D :j

The thing is the less fuel is in the tank, the lighter the car is, therefore less energy (i.e. less fuel) is required to move it.

  • I put in £10 a time, and see how long it can last me.... when I don't have to take DS to MILs, I can walk to work, so it usually lasts a while.

With my car, I would keep the tank full, and would try to refill as soon as the guage approached the half-full point. My 'logic' was simple - in the case of an emergency we would always have a reasonably full tank of fuel and could get to virtually anywhere in the UK at a moment's notice.

I do this too, I'm paranoid about running out of fuel in an emergency, so I wait til the needle is exactly half, then fill her right to the top!
So I've always got at least half a tank, just in case:D

When you fill up how many times do you let the pump 'click' before you are sure it is full.I only do it to the first click but i have seen people click away to make sure they get every last precious drop in their tank.

But it doesn't matter - every click dispenses more fuel and you have to pay for it. And then you use it anyway. No-one is getting anything for free and they're not gaining anything by squeezing an extra litre into the tank.

Clicking and letting it spill over, on the other hand, is simply a waste of money. ;)
