A gentleman I used to do odd jobs for never needed to buy toilet roll, he had a rag that he washed every so often and apparently he is not the only person to do this.

My dad will go out for a meal and hide his own bottle of wine in his bag and will keep topping up his glass.
My dad calls security at the hospital car park and complains that the car park machine ate his money in order to avoid paying for his ticket.
My dad once forgot to take a voucher to a restaurant and managed to persuade the waitress to give him the staff discount.
My dad collects the oil from cans of tuna and burns it in little oil lamps with a wick.
As a kid we could never play the first hole at the golf course in case we were seen from the club house - we always started at the second hole.
At the driving range, if it was quiet he would as us kids to run up the field and collect the balls so he could hit them all again.

    Hehe,

Love the wine one. It is very expensive in restaurants!! Might use this one at my birthday meal :rotfl:

The only thing worse was to see the rag steeping in a bucket.

And for my third post.....I wonder if we will now see some interesting cringe moments regarding the cost of carrier bags? What will people do to avoid paying 5p?

That shouldn't be a problem. Providing you're not buying a lot have the chauffeur carry the shopping to the car.

My aunt washes clingfilm and dries it over her cupboard doors.

i don't get the problem with asking for a black coffee with a splash of milk. That's my preferred drink, I'm not sure why the cafe owner thinks it's a money saving request. If she charges 20p for milk, I'm guessing her white coffee is extremely milky. But to be honest, I've never been to a place which charges more for white coffee than black. Do you charge extra for sugar, too?

Black coffee is well black. It's like when people order an Americano but want milk in it. Once the milk is added it ceases to be an Americano.

If you want milk in your coffee just order a white coffee.

People taking offence with the white americano is a coffee snob thing not a cost thing. I take black coffee but I'm shocked you think it's alright to charge 20p for a splash of milk. You get more goodwill from just charging everyone the higher price....

It's not a snob thing. An Americano coffee by its definition does not contain milk.

A friend of mine worked in Starbucks whilst at university and there were people who ordered black coffee or an Americano and were upset that that's what they received. The staff had to start asking people if they wanted room left for milk even when they ordered coffees that didn't contain milk. Twits.

If you want white coffee and are too tight to pay 20p or whatever for milk you shouldn't be in a cafe.

Trouble is with any business as soon as you start to explain how/why you make a charge for anything you will get some people who are happy with that and others who are not.
Other examples, croissant plain. 1 price. Croissant with jam and butter another price. Most people don't want their croissant with jam and butter. So do you charge one cover price for everyone to avoid looking tight for asking for the higher price for the plain item?

Most independent coffee shops will have a black coffee price and a white coffee price. You will pay less for an espresso than a machiatto for example. 20p or so less. A lattee or cappacino will cost more than a white coffee because there is more milk in it. Funny enough that's the Starbucks effect where we now feel an 8oz coffee is too small and will order a 12oz or 16oz which has the same tiny amount of weak poor quality coffee in it but a shed load more milk.

I charge less for black coffee than white because it costs me less to make. I don't see why you would charge the same. Sugar has become an expected commodity the same as tap water. No I wouldn't charge for those. Do I charge extra for an extra shot, babycino, or soya/non dairy milk, yes, because they cost me more.

But when Starbucks and the like sell you flavoured syrups at extortionate prices, which I don't because I sell a beautiful single estate high quality coffee that doesn't warrant drowning in cr5p you are essentially paying extra for sugar....

The idea of the thread was funny examples of people being tight. Which anyone ordering a black coffee and expecting to get a dash of milk for free is being. If it's on the menu as a chargeable item why expect it for free?
