Thriftlady - pity the poor teachers having to sort out disputes and find said toys  I'm entirely with you on this - I always bought food for the Small Penguins based on what they needed - why does cereal have to have toys in it

    Hi thriftlady,

Yes it's maddening! But I suppose it must work or they wouldn't do it. Some parents must give in to 'pester power' Unfortunately for my kids I don't. (insert nasty mummy smiley here) We have to buy them anyway so I can only assume that the companies that give gimmicks with the shoes are trying to persuade us to buy their brand.

I've just been to get my three school shoes this week....total the cost £125! _pale_ And that doesn't include the cost of new trainers and rugby boots etc which will almost certainly take it well over the £200 mark. Ds1 is only 13 but has size 10 feet so like many other parents we have to pay VAT on his shoes and clothing just because of his size.

And don't get me started on the blazer...£78!!!

You've got me ranting now too! :D

Pink muttering to herself and wandering off to find the school uniform thread.

Overcast and windy here although not very cold, need to go to bank in a while and then to collect DD4 and her friend from airport, God knows how long that will take...depends on traffic.

Thriftlady...thoroughly agree with your 'rant'. Would be nice to be able to say 'may I just have the shoes please and a reduction as I'm not taking the toy'...can imagine how far you would get.

Have a good day all, no idea what I am going to feed these girls or ourselves this evening...pasta calls I think.

    Hi everyone!
Long time no hear...no idea what's been going on in Old Style land as have been on me hols but hope all are keeping well[ish]
Fab hol this year up in Northumberland. We'd originally booked the cottage and paid the deposit just before OH was made redundant so I'd had to cancel but the owner was so kind that she kept our deposit on hold and offset it against the cost this year. There are some lovely people around aren't there. It's been a fairly frugal week as weather was not too bad..lots of walking and using our NT cards. We totted up that had we had to part with cash for the NT outings it would've cost us £82!! Mainly self catered but have had lots of tea and cake out so waist line has expanded sideways nicely:rotfl: :rotfl:
Back home now and the place looks like a Chinese laundry. Can't wait for all that lot to be ironed later in the week:eek: Gradually getting back to normal and have now caught up with most of the household tasks. Lovely surprise when we got in...my parents had got us a Samsonite suitcase in vgc from freecycle...being thrifty souls we looked at new ones in the shops and they range from £80-150!! Result:j Other good bargain was the most gorgeous beaded top I bought in Oxfam for £5.99 which I've stashed away for my sister's civil ceremony which is happening next year even though the material girl is out of her box and yelling loudly that she wants to wear it NOW!!
    Enjoy the rest of Tuesday

Hi everyone - just popping back in for mooch around.
    Happy Birthday CATZNINE!

ALIBOB - glad your Dad is doing well.

PEEM - my DH is just the same; I'm tempted to buy him some golf clubs but he hates golf! Then I thought about a fishing rod but he hates taking the hook out of a fish's mouth so, at the moment, I'm stuck. It's just like having the kids home from school on a wet gloomy day! The weather doesn't help; he would be out in the garden if the sun was shining.
DANNAHAZ - I find the gym harder work one day than the next. I don't know why. Sometimes, the half an hour seems like ages. I had my first monthly check and measure and have earned a dollar. I do enjoy it even if it does seem hard sometimes - I'm always glad I've been. I hope your back gets better soon.

JACKIEO - congratulations on all the good news. I'm so pleased for you that everything is going well. You deserve it!

Anyway, back to the chores. I'm prepping for tonight's Carbonara and then I might do some knitting so see you all later.

    .
I must give the lovely helpful lady in the shoe shop credit. She didn't reveal the hidden dolly in the shoe or the radio until after I'd said 'yes, these will do thanks'. It is an excellent shoe shop (Humphries in Droitwich btw) because they are so helpful and professional. They must have a policy of not pushing the gimmicks to the kids but letting parents decide first.
  • My head hurts! GRRRRRROOOOWWWWWLLLLL

Why do people go so far money-saving that they could seriously make themselves sick, but refuse to believe it. You cant cook a stew by sticking it in the oven with the oven on for 30 minutes, turn it off, then leave it in there all day to reheat that night and expect that you wont' get sick one day. Use a SC, !!!!!!. I DO know what I'm talking about when its cooking, it was my career for 14 years.

I'm the friend that never gets invited to dinner because all my friends are intimidated by my cooking. Even when its not 'company's coming' food.

    Rant over.

Right I've made the decision, that owing to the yucky weather - severe weather warning here - I'm not going home. I'm staying at work, making use of their facilities and messing about online.

Also just helped the sales team and written an ad for them. Yet another string to my very busy bow:rotfl:

Very tired and hungry, but really don't see the point in driving 12 miles home, to be there for two hours, to drive 12 miles back again. Waste of petrol and would eat into the £30 I'm going to make tonight!!!

    Bored, someone talk to me!!!

  • Well that's me finished at work until next Tuesday :j

DD comes home tonight, and the dog returns home :T Just about to take him out for his last walk

DH is at the hospital getting his results about his hand - he can't straighten it and has been undergoing tests since May  Fingers crossed he doesn't come home with a hook :rotfl:

Tea tonight will be pasta and something

I'm so excited about DD coming back I haven't seen her since Thursday morning :D

    Better go

    (((((hugs)))))
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)
