Eek! half way through buying a used VW Passat 2.0TDI - what do I do????

Didn't someone make it for them and tell them that using it in the way they did was illegal?
Yeah, Bosch apparently.
That does rather imply that, at the very least any car with a Bosch engine management system potentially has similar code, even if it is not being used.
If it's something that's used in development for troubleshooting then the chances are all systems have similar code. Whether other manufacturers have been stupid enough to do the same as VW is an entirely different question.0 -
Oh god, here we go. I wondered how long it would be before you turned up to capitalize on this.
The fact Volkswagen blagged a few numbers in their emissions tests doesn't mean they don't make good cars. I've not heard of the cracking sumps and I think the issues with the oil pump only affects some of the 2.0 TDi's on the Audi's so ermmm, yeah okay.
To be fair it's a bit ridiculous to put your head in the sand regarding problems with VWs.
VAG cars have a variety of faults, some of them fairly entrenched into their designs. In this regard they are no different to most other manufacturers, and I don't think anyone is saying that VAG's general reputation isn't decent enough (though hardly top of the tree).
Generally speaking VW cars are fine. But the same can be said for Ford, Vauxhall, or most other marques. VW engineering is generally pretty unremarkable -- quite good, but not spectacular.0 -
They didn't just 'blag' a few numbers, they engineered a complex system to specifically deceive and bypass laws on emissions - As others have said, this is fraud authorised at the highest level of the largest car manufacture in the world.
I'm not sure what your other comment is about, I don't have a Range Rover will have have one or aspired to own one.
The acid test is very simple - If you really believe VW has done no wrong go and find some VW/Audi's stuck in traffic and breath in their lovely emission fumes....I rather not thank you. NO/small particles produced as a result of diesel combustion is nothing to do with global warming, it's to do with trying not to expose your lungs to harmful carcinogens.
I suppose your one these people who still believe smoking does no harm....
Depends what's worse for the environment, all the rusty body shells from knackered Ford's, all the Apple devices that were destroyed due to planned obsolescence or the particles put into the environment. Nothing like a good old fashioned witch hunt.0 -

Herbert,
Please find attached version 7.6c of the engine management software. As discussed in our meeting, following the shift away from physical test tools. we are now shipping a number of diagnostic software tools with the code to assist in development and testing processes.
**Please ensure none of these files are put into any production vehicles because that would be a really stupid thing to do**
Mit Freundlichen Grußen,

From the few VW hire cars I have driven, they are all like poo off a spade & an excellent car so a little difference in supposed emissions wont actually change the car. The only issue I'd be concerned with is if it makes a difference to my annual tax costs.0
