This whole saga is yet another way of lawyers getting licences to print money. Now on top of the PPI calls and the "Good News I can get you £5000 for the accident you never had" calls we will get the I can get you money for your VW emissions calls...

I must be the only one who can not see what VW have done wrong here.
They were told that they had to achieve emissions of ? They were told what the test criteria is. So they achieve the requirement under the criteria as laid out.
If we except that a car will have different emissions at idle compered to 100 MPH there has got to be a set test criteria . If the powers that be , think that any car manufacturer wont look at this criteria to optimise its performance within it ,they are deluding themselves . Personally I think its more to do with the American government looking for any excuse to A, generate an income from European businesses as they have done before and B, protect their own manufacturing base.
I have a VW Passat TDI sport and a Audi A6, both lovely cars , do I care what the emissions are , not really , would I buy another one, yes definitely . If they were recalled would I take them in , probably not.

Actually, they did a lot more. They detected that there was a test being carried out and deliberately ran the engine so as to pass the test. That's more than idle vs 100mph... It's achieve X emissions at 30mph, achieve 20 times better emissions at 30mph if the car detects it's on a rolling road.

You cannot, however you stretch your imagination, put that down to simply chasing the numbers.

VW diesel sales halted in Switerzerland. Given the affected cars are now essentially 'illegal' due to emissions failures I suspect more European countries will do the same.

Let's be clear about this, this isn't a normal 'recall', this wasn't a 'mistake' on the part of a designer or a manfacturing error. This was a cynical attempt by VW to increases profit at ALL costs, regardless of any harm to longterm health that may result. VW need to be punished to the full extent of the law, someone very high up at VW sanctioned this course of action.

For those who don't see the 'concern' about emissions....Why not go and stand next one of these ultra-clean diesels VW are selling. Leave the engine on, and see how long you want to stand there breathing in what's coming out of the exhaust. Even worse how about you kids walking to school past a whole line of these cars stuck in a traffic jam??...Yes there are more polluting cars/vans/buses around, but VW sold these cars on a fake illusion that they are some how 'clean' and better for air quality. If I was a VW owner I would be looking into a class-action law suit.

I would also add that it would be the car of choice without any doubt for sucidal tendencies .... and of people in possession of a garage.

Temporarily halted, and only unsold Euro V models. Won't affect Euro VI models on sale elsewhere in Europe.

Always makes me laugh. Check out previous class action "wins" The lawyers on most class actions win (sorry, earn) tens of millions of $. The car owner will quite literally, at most, get a coupon for a free valet. Or if they're really lucky, $100 off their next VW...
  • Good morning,

You have previously in this thread allayed my (minor) fears about the 2L diesel Tiguan my husband is about to receive tomorrow.

He went to see the dealer on Friday and the dealer showed him a letter from Volkswagen stating that his car is Euro VI. I have re-rread this thread annd done a bit of googling and as I underdtand it, Euro VI is not (currently) implicated?

Correct - VAG announced last week Euro VI was not affected:
    http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/about-us/news/686/volkswagen-ag-has-issued-the-following-information:

For those with Euro V cars, along with confirmation Euro VI unaffected:

Many diesel owners make a big thing of their low road tax and this may change in the light of so-called new information but it would be a political hot potato so probably wouldn't happen quickly. If it did then second hand prices would probably dip.

Surely In this situation the car mfg would be liable to pay the extra tax .
