My husband will take delivery of his new Motability Tiguan 2l diesel car on Wednesday. If this scandal is as big a thing as some of you suggest it will be and if it impacts main dealers so that there is a very long way to go to a dealership for servicing or, worst case, VW collapses in terms of dealerships in the UK, will he have to give the car back? If so, I wonder whether the additional payment made over and above Disability Living Allowance will be repaid? (It's a lot more than £500.) Motability cars have to be maintained at a main dealer...
To answer the specific questions...
1. Dealer network might be rationalised, a bit, but worst case a haircut of non performers. As more money is made from aftersales than sales it won't impact servicing or repair. Plenty of places will still be able to service your car.
2. He won't have to give the car back.0 -
I don't see why this should ruin VW in the long term. People are overreacting -- humans make mistakes, and do stupid things under pressure.
We now have VW, Toyota and GM who have, in recent years been involved in covering things up and making dubious design decisions. It's now up to them to fix things.
Would it stop me buying from any of these marques? No. No more than it would stop me buying a Renault after the Clio bonnet fiasco or Mitsubishi's cover-up of defects in their trucks many moons ago.0 -

That's more than bp dropped when its rig blew up in the Gulf of Mexico. This differs from Toyota as it involves an overt fraud.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

Personally, I hope this makes a dent in our government, every other countries government and really the global population. People need to accept that internal combustion engines belong in a museum and not on the road.
More money and time needs to be invested in electric or hydrogen alternatives, not reducing CO2 emissions. We (and I use the term "we" to mean the younger generations) are going to look back at our era and wonder why on Earth we were using internal combustion engines beyond the year 2000. We have made so many enhancements in data storage, computing power, hands free technology...the list goes on and on. Yet we are in a position where we apparently can't get more than 100 mile range from a battery powered car?!
Yes, Tesla have a car with a range over 200 miles if driven in the correct manor, but it isn't enough. We need the cost of those cars to drop rapidly and we need to tackle the charging of or replacement of batteries to give us a much quicker way to get full charge whilst on the move.
But ultimately it won't make any bit of difference. We'll be living in a world in 10 years where still only a minority of people use electric powered cars, whilst we continue to invest in technological advances that allow us to be more lazy and care less about saving the world we live in.
Maybe one day, when it's too late, we'll realise that we should have done something sooner.0 -
I'm in the same predicament as the op. I'm about to buy a vw Tiguan 2.0TDI 2010. I'm supposed to collect it tomorrow but I can't decide what to do. I want the car for towing and having done tons of research I basically narrowed it down to a Tiguan, and found one the right price, age and mileage but then the scandal blew up! Argh!!!0

Have you put a deposit down on it? If not I'd be tempted to delay the purchase until VW confirm the situation.
That's what I'm doing anyway..0 -

Now an admission that the same fraud has been perpetrated in Europe.“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

As a company car user of a VW Passat 2.0TDI for the past 3 years, does anyone know if there will be any tax implications being backdated if its found my vehicle is one affected?0

b) while there hasn't been any full investigation as yet, I have not seen any implications that there are any questions over actual or tested levels of carbon dioxide grams per kilometre, on which HMRC seeks to tax you. This accusation / scandal relates specifically to pollutants other than carbon emissions.0 -
