Did you not take any references when he moved in? They would be the type of contacts who should know about him.
There were no previous landlord references we could get (lived with his dad then with nan) and no employer one and he's self employed. As we met his mum at viewing (who confirmed he had given her enough money for 8 months rent before he went travelling) there didn't seem to be anyone else we could contact anyway! Apart from his sister who lived fairly close but she has conveniently gone travelling around the world since he disappeared!

Be sure to highlight your concern is for his welfare but that type of contact you propose is problematic. You say his long absences are in character.

It could come across, accidentally, that you are chasing him for rent arrears on social media via his friends/relatives.

I am concerned it will come across this way. He gave a decent deposit (more than one months rent) so we're not out of pocket even if he has done a runner. It's just that we actually really like the guy and are genuinely concerned about him. I'll definitely try to make that obvious. Though we have sent him several messages saying we are worried and can he just let us know he's ok.

Is there any way to tell if these messages and calls are being blocked or if the phone has genuinely not been turned on all this time?

Proper agreement with next of kin and contacts will be a definite next time. If there is a next time!
  • Take it no luck on Facebook? That is handy as it tells you how long since people were on etc... Otherwise yes I would try ex gf route just to be on safe side!

  • Unfortunately he doesn't have a facebook account, or instagram or twitter. The few members of his friends/family who I've found with an open profile on FB make no mention of him in the last month.

Come on then, take some action! What are you waiting for here?

You won't get in any trouble for contacting the police to tell them you're worried about someone who lives with you but who you haven't seen for a month and is now uncontactable.

The positive is that no news is good news - you would surely have seen posts about him had something bad happened.

I would send a message to one of his family members, just saying that you are concerned as he hasn't been home or in contact for so long. I don't think that this would be inappropriate given the circumstances.

I think formal lodgers application forms have a next of kin section for emergencies so consider this next time.

All Lodger's agreements are 'formal', they are the written evidence of a contract.

There's no 'official' lodgers agreement template though. I just wanted to clarify for the OP.
If his official address is your address they would have come there first, they wouldn't know you weren't his family/NoK until after they'd visited his (your) home and you had told them he was just a lodger.

Not necessarily. They would contact the next of kin. If his NOK details are registered at the hospital they would have no reason to attend the home address.

Again 'official' address - that doesnt exist. There is a primary, or main, residence.

e.g. For students their primary and main residence is usually the family home, the student accomodation is temporary (even if it's 30 weeks of the year).

I agree, putting an emphasis on the fact he doesnt owe you any money.

I have messaged his ex, just waiting for a reply. We aren't friends on facebook so hopefully she still sees the message.

Don't worry I'm definitely ignoring that advice, selling his stuff was never something I considered. I don't think it would be worth all that much anyway!
