Five OS Pleasures in your day today

-
1. Enjoying an extra hour's sleep because of the clocks going back, but oh how I hate the early dark nights.
2. A trip to Costco for bulk buying in advance of the January VAT increases. (Not really Old Style, but we are now well stocked up with toothpaste, soaps, detergents and old things which will last) so in the long term money will have been saved.
3. Arriving home to the delicious smells of Oxtail caserole - the first real winter-type meal this autumn.
5. A lovely walk later in the fading sunshine and stopping to watch of flock of about 40 green parakeets in a pear tree. The noise they make as a flock is horrendous and to see them all eating the pears which had been left unpicked high up on the tree was a fascinating sight.0 -
Hi all
Ampersand, thank you for link to fermentation and kefir in NZ I have saved it, very interesting!
Ollie, if you want to make kefir you need a starter, there are people who give some away - I have only just started and mine is not grown enough to send out but if you want I can try and send you some in a few weeks, please remind me!
Got to be quick because dinner is ready and waiting downstairs, so hugs to all and here are my pleasures for the last two days:
Saturday
1 - Up early and went to the Festival of Interdependence, very interesting stuff
2 - There was a workshop on breadmaking and although the hands on stuff was fully booked I was allowed to stay and watch and take on the tips of the very experienced baker.
3 - The baker gave me a bit of sourdough starter, which I am going to use to make my own sourdough bread.
4 - DH caught up with me in the afternoon (we had to re-queue again to enter the building, it was so busy) and in the queue we met another friend.
5 - Also at the same event I made a contact that might potentially lead to a job.
6 - I was able to get several monthly "carbon ration" booklets to distribute to our Transition Town friends, from something called "The Ministry Of Trying To Do Something About It". The woman wore a fav 40s dress, it was all very realistic!
Today:
1 - Walk to the farmers market with DH
2 - Two batches of soda scones made, one using dairy kefir the other using soya kefir to serve to my friends in the afternoon.
3 - Three of my knitting friends came to have a knit and a chat and all loved the scones - one of them is Irish and she told me that they are as good as her mum's - a very high compliment indeed!
4 - I started a new scarf for DH using the reclaimed yarn from a scarf that had not come out very well.
5 - Pasta e Fagioli soup (pasta & beans) tonight, with beans and some of the carrots from our garden.
Off to eat now, good night everybody xxxFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
40 green parakeets in a pear tree.
Here are mine;
1) A lie in (with the OH ) sorry to lower the tone, but it's free and a pleasure:D
2) Lovely, scrummy roast dinner -chicken, roast potatoes, gravy, peas and carrots followed by chocolate fudge pudding and cream. My favourite meal.
3) Leftover gravy to stash in the freezer, leftover chicken for supper tomorrow and a chicken carcase to be made into stock.
4) The ironing -not doing it you understand but the 'having done it'.
5) A bottle of wine to look forward to later this evening. Not really OS except that me and the OH have been very frugal and restrained with our wine drinking recently limiting it to the weekends only (inc Friday obviously). The anticipation makes one appreciate it more. Something to bear in mind with food too I think0 -
Lovley OS day
1. Made HM sauce for pasta which will do for a few days.
2. Went to library and got new Belle de Jour. Ooh la la.
3. Cuppa and X Factor tonight. Lovely.
4. House all clean and smelling lovely for the start of the week.
5. Bought Xmas paper - no pressies yet but it's a start.'The road to a friends house is never long'0 -
:hello:First time i have posted on this bit of OS so hello everyone.
My (hopefully) OS pleasures today
1) 2hrs on my allotment with my kids
2) Picking one of my cabbages (i have never grown them before and only took allotment on in June)
3) Getting 3 loads of washing dry on the line, it smells lovely
4) baking some scones and taking them to my dads as he was too ill to come to see us today and didnt want my children to get his cold.
5) sitting looking at my lovely clean house ( 5 flylady stars this week:T)

I haven't posted for ages but I'm redundant from this Friday so thought I ought to get things back into perspective :-)
1. That extra hour this morning.
2. Homemade veggie soup including last night's leftovers.
3. Cooking up some apples I'd forgotten about and topping them with sponge for home-made pud.
4. Noticing scores of honey-bees on a very unkempt aster and convincing myself that my garden is a haven for wildlife and not just neglected.
5. Ironing some shirts that DH had probably forgotten he'd got.0 -
Hi everyone,
Here's my 5 for today
1) Dear friend came over for coffee and gave me a lovely card and a gorgeous red candle. She also brought scones and muffins
2) Bought a cosy fleece for £5 and long sleeved T from asda
3) Extra hour in bed, hurray
4) Roast Pork dinner with potatoes and veg - Pork joint half price from Mr T and plenty left over for Monday
5) Long soak in coconut scented bath - reminds me of summer and sun cream0 -
1) Felt poorly yesterday but much better today so managed to do yesterday's washing up and tidying and a load of washing and the house is fairly decent now.
2) Went swimming after lunch. My mum bought a season ticket so we go and swim in the pool attached to the local private school. Its really like having your own private pool, its very rare there is anyone else in at all! And its free (well, not for mum but she seems to have a massive "family" and uses it herself) Little son (6) learned to swim last week so its all exciting at the moment.
3) Little son has also been showing his first ever wobbly tooth to everyone.
4) We are looking after next door's pets while they are away and my sons have decided they are going to take over that job for me. They're not terribly independant so its funny to see them trotting over next door with the key! Did have to rush over this morning though as big son filled the guinea pigs bowls with cat dry food, not guinea pig pellets.....
5) Quite a nice tea - comfort food again. I made salmon cakes (just mashed potato mixed with tinned salmon, scoops on a baking tray with a bit of cheese on top and browned in the oven). With carrots and brocolli.
6) School friend came and brought her own tea bags as I have run out (the shame!) and live 10 miles from a shop that opens on a Sunday.0 -
My five today:
1. Another NSD except for DS1 raiding my purse to pop to the local newsagent for crisps  but he returned with chocolate for me, so I forgave him.:D
2. Getting more washing dried on the line between the showers.
3. Did not give in to the temptation to get a takeaway supper but found food in the freezer. Supplies have run very low due to us having been poorly and I haven't restocked yet but there was enough to feed everyone so that was good.
4. Clearing out a TON of newspapers into the recycling that I first had to go through for press cuttings for work-related stuff. I've cut out lots of sudokus that I hadn't done so that's given me a new pile of them for free. Oh, and I found a couple of useful recipes too.
5. Hot chocolate while I'm typing this.
Sleep well everyone

1) Went to a lovely party last night in a dress that I had never worn before - £5 from the charity shop and two compliments! Well worth it.
2) Managed to put our last chandelier lampshade together. They have about thirty strings of glass beads hanging from each one and the strings all have to be put in place individually... However, there are now no bare bulbs left in the house.
3) Visit of MIL and FIL this evening for tea and was able to serve some home made veg to keep the cost of such a big production meal down. DS's GF was there too, so it felt like a real family affair, despite the fact that DD is away.
4) A huge bag of walnuts from MIL's tree in France.
5) We finally hung the mirror in the lounge. It's rather fancy, with bevelled glass and an embossed frame. It looked awful in there while we were still doing things up and I almost put it on Freecycle twice but now that the floor is down and the glittering lampshade is up, it looks good.0
